Who are the big tough teams at 10u level A?? are there any?

by gunshy » Fri May 06, 2011 4:20 am

Looking In, very nice job on that last post with a message to be taken to heart; "it will be over before you know it". DD is a Senior with 7-8 HS games left, 7 weeks of travel, then off to college. It WILL be over before I know it. I hate to see the younger guys banging on the Dreams, Shockwaves, Chix, Magic, etc, as they are the groups that helped advance softball in Indiana to where it is today. It is easy to find each of these organizations in the finishing order at Nationals, some NSA and some ASA, each and every year. These up-and-coming coaches should be seeking out knowledge from organizations that have been there and done that for many years, rather than declaring what they do as "drinking the Kool-Aid".I bet you can look up the finishes at 10u NSA Nationals in, let's say 2006, and easily find all 4 forementioned programs, as they all have a history and a record......would you find the CP Bulldogs, Heat, Extreme or any of the other current listed 10u teams there? Probably not. Young coaches can learn a lot and save themselves from repeating mistakes of their predecessors if they spend more time asking questions and less time making statements.

Gunshy and Lookin In

I like to call it "cool aid" for you older gentlemen because you guys are so cool and walk around at these tournaments as if you are the one and only's. It's hilarious! I don't have a daughter in 10U. Read my other posts. I have two older daughters that play and one is being looked at by several colleges (small colleges but it's still money). Not to worry, because my wife and I can put her through college anyhow and don't need to worry about scholarships. I would imagine most of you oldsters think its great to get a scholarship and I'm guessing many of you haven't went to college. It's like the American Softball Dream to get your daughter into college via a scholarship so that you can brag and boast.

Point is, the game at the 10U level has progressed since you "and I" were down there just a few years back. The entire game is advancing and it is beginning at an earlier level. Kids are going to hitting coaches and pitching coaches at the age of 7 and 8 year round.

Reason for radar on a 10U is that I think the 10U is far to pitching dominant now with the speeds some of these kids are pitching. I think for safety reasons (bats have a lot of pop now) and to make the game more funner (grammar check not needed) the stripe should be dropped back to about 38 or maybe 40 feet at 10U instead of 35 feet. I have been proposing this to several sanctioning bodies and it is getting some interest but they obviously don't want to be seen going around and gunning these girls. I will though, cause I think it is in the best interest of the game. Just my opinion.

As far as organizations go....Chix, Dreams etc. are non existent at 10U. If they were so great then what happened to them? Again, I'm not in 10U but do have an interest in the game from the ground level up. I believe it may be because no one drinks that "cool aid" (yes cool aid) anymore of the older organizations. No one cares about your arrogance or your knowledge that you want to force down their throats. Sadly, it has swung the other way now to where there are too many watered down teams. The 12U has so many watered down teams it is sad. Good business for the sanctioning bodies though!

coach- i wish they would go to 40 ft as well. the game is dominated by pitching and the ones who suffer are the fielders. i've seen on average, from weekend to weekend, only about 4 or 5 (which might be pushing it) girls actually hitting in a line up. who wants to watch a bunch of strikeouts and no hitters? let these girls show what they can do in the field. and, at 40 ft in 10u, it wouldn't be such a huge jump when they go up to 12u. instead, as it is now, they have to throw a bigger ball AND do it from 5 ft further.

Can I get time, blue? Let's start by saying this thread is approaching 40 pages (I am hoping for 50 before season is out)...while not every post is about 10u the majority is.

Here is what the real issue is...on one side we have the younger level coaches who think they know everything...and then we have the guys that have been around who think they know everything. The problem comes from both sides NOT thinking the other knows ANYTHING.

No you won't find those names in 2006...maybe CP, but not Heat and Xtreme. Both of those are new organizations. That being said, why can't these be considered this generations Waves, Magic, Dreams, etc?? Just like you don't find the the teams that got Indiana headed in the right direction in any 10U/12U. They did their work and made this game better. All of them have been started by dads (or moms). Some get younger teams in the mix as they move up, but we all have done this in basically the same manner.

The fact is, the young coaches CAN learn a lot from several of the guys on this board. The problem is when the young guys FEEL like the wisdom trying to be passed down is a back handed comment that they don't know what they are doing because they haven't put in 5-10 years. We all know the successes the Bell, Lewis and Ramsey's of our sport have enjoyed...they SHOULD be listened to. HOWEVER, those same guys that have the knowledge to pass along, do so with the understanding that these new coaches don't need lectures or getting knocked down because they are overzealous about 10U success.

The team my daughter was on at 10s had a phenominal year. 11s, they got brought back to reality, and now at 12s they are back to being better. Nothing has changed in how we coach them. We want each of the girls to be successful, to learn how to play this game the best way we can teach them, to have fun, and to be challenged. We collected our trophies at 10s (not that we were after that), but now it is time to push them to be the best they can be. In a few more years, if they so choose, we will have to start looking at getting them exposure. Those are the philosophies the relatively new guys need information about...the path to take, things you would have done differently, or things you would have done sooner. Not "10u means nothing", "if you aren't USA/ASA then you should go back to rec ball".

I understand what COACH is saying, there is a pereception that some of you old timers (no disrespect intended) have an aura about you that your sh!t don't stink...unfortunately in a lot of cases perception is viewed as reality...true or not. You guys are in a great position to continue helping softball grow in Indiana. Be mentors, throw things out there...if a coach wants to take it great, if not great. That doesn't mean his way won't work either.

Besides, aren't we all in this for the betterment of the girls that play softball? If not and this is all about you (in general), then get out. The only thing I care about as far as my reputation goes is that we do things the right way, are in it for the girls, are fair and repsectful to this game. Other than that the girls playing the game are what matters...and the name on their jerseys are recognized as a great organization that does things how they should be done.

Hey "coach"
It appears your the one who "haven't went to college". What's hilarious is you think you've watched me walk around these tournaments, Who am I??? Have you heard me brag on here or anywhere about my DD? Nope, never! Same for gunshy! "If" your DD is around the age you state, she must of been cut by the Waves, chix, dreams, to have such a problem. Why no 10's with some of these org's, you already answered your question! To watered down, to many people wanting little suzie to be a star, i'll start my own team. Look at the older age groups, the better one have merged teams for that very reason. Indiana pride/expolsion, Shockwaves/dreams and so on! Same for just about every age group, everybody thinks "I" can do better. So kids getting instruction at 8 yrs old is new? May not be the smartest thing though! How about they get a chance to enjoy the game before learning how to throw 10 different pitches and hit(watch out) 48 on a gun?? good luck "cat" !

One more thing "Coach"
If your dd's are older and you have don't have a 10U. Why are you running around at 10U tournaments with a radar gun in your pocket?

Man this is good stuff! Hey Gunshy, I didn't realize your S*^T didn't stink! I've had beers with you, I know better!! Boy i remember these days! I thought we were crazy! The thing Coach has right is it is way watered down. I'm a long time Dream(from day one) and now a Shockwave! Why Shockwave, merge two good teams to make one VERY good team! I'm willing to bet that in a few years you 10U guys going at each other will be in the same dugout! There was a guy i said that it would be a cold day in hell before my DD played for him! (right "Bucketboy") Guess what, it got cold in hell! There was a team i said no way to for years, guess what? Boom shakalaka Shockwaves(is that right gushy?)! you guys should relax and enjoy it, believe it or not you will in a few years! We have! Didn't realize i was this old though :o thought i was still kickin it! Looking in, you nailed it!! Goes by way too fast!!ENJOY!! Oh coach, you have no clue who "lookin" is, we have tried for years to figure out this secret. Than i looked around the corner from my house, have known him since my DD was in first grade! Don't take things so serious, have some fun with this thing! ;)

Snoop...great post. Good back story. And just to clear that up, I said PERCEPTION was that sh!t don't stink...we all know that EVERYBODIES sh!t does in fact stink. :) :D
In my brief coaching career I found a BIG change, for us anyway, going from 10 to 12. Wins and loses don't matter as much (but I still prefer winning) and it is all about trying to play the best teams we can. That being said, 12s is also very watered down IMHO. How about this question...even though it is watered down, does having all these teams grow softball more in Indiana? More girls are being exposed to better players so maybe they still do improve their skills despite being on a less talented team?? Just a thought...doesn't mean I want to spend a weekend playing 5 of them.
