High school ball vs. Select ball

by allboutsoftball » Mon Apr 04, 2011 9:30 pm

I took my daughter out to a highschool tournament recently because I thought she could pick up a few things and I for one was very disappointed.I have talked to quite a few people since then and other than a handful of teams highschool ball is nowhere close to select ball.our whole team could start varsity right now for most of the teams in our area and you could argue 4 of our 7th graders would be 1 of the best players on their varsity team right now.

HS softball is Glorified Rec Ball, unless you are lucky enough to have a town full of select players. Lucky for me, our town is one of the few that has a team full of select players, AND a very good HS softball coaching staff.

No doubt that select ball is where it's at but I'm curious to hear experiences of when/if your daughter made it to her varsity squad. If you have a 14 year old playing 16U and doing well, is she varsity ready or is the talent so deep now that a varsity team is nothing but high-level 16U players so it's rare for a freshman or sophomore to make the varsity team? I know that talent varies from school to school but generally speaking what do you all think?

*disclaimer* - My daughter is not near the age where this question would be relevent. I'm just trying to see how high school ball differs fro m select since I have not seen a HS game.

If your DD is playing select ball she will make her HS team.

HS Coaches have to keep their AD happy with wins. If they start to falter, they will get replaced. For us, we have 1 softball coach and 3 others who only know that a softball is round. Each year the HS gets more select players, but they still have a ways to go on the unity department. My DD is a freshman varsity starter and beat out some upperclassmen to earn her spot. The coach might have "courtesy" spots for seniors, but more than likely will play the girls that can get a win in district.

As for the Donkey's, I saw Rev Mike picking up 10U's last weekend to play in a 14U over the summer. I guess he has to give the other teams a chance. :P

They are two very different things. Both are fun to watch and participate in if you have the right perspective. I have seen some good ball and some bad ball in both. Obviously the Select ball is going to be much better across the board. I have seen some pretty good HS games in the 8-5A district this year.

Unfortunately Travel Ball doesn't give out High School Letter Jackets. If you don't think it's important to DD, ask her when she get's to High School. Enjoy the game. Know the difference. Hopefully you'll be lucky enough to have a good High School Softball program. Otherwise take a styrofoam cup to the game! ;)

But remember, they ALL play High School Softball. It might be the crappiest little Team from Whatchacallit, TX. to Nationally ranked The Woodlands, TX. But, they ALL play it. Have fun when you get there, you don't really have a choice!
Read the destructions first.

I guess the real problem was I was excpecting the level of play to be a step up and it wasn't even close.I know there are some very good teams out there in the Houston area but from everything I hear those are the exception rather than the rule.I will enjoy it and I know what school sports is all about. When we were young we didn't have select ball and year round opportunities to play a particular sport.
