TCS - Cathedral City - Punishers

by socal98pops » Mon Apr 04, 2011 12:44 pm

Did anyone else attend the TCS tourney in Cathedral City?
We got back yesterday and had an opportunity to watch some great games.
Some of the better teams were Punishers, Nemesis, SunCats, Sun Devils, Panthers and Hurricanes.... I think the biggest upset was the Punishers losing to Sun Devils in International Tie Breaker. From what I hear the Sun Devils also beat the Punishers last week at the Victory friendly.

It was a 1-1 game that then went into ITB....Punishers were the home team and had first ups.. the first batter bunted which advanced the ITB runner on 2nd to third and the Sun Devlis threw out the runner at first. The next hitter came up and hit a bomb to the outfield... the outfielder caught the ball and the Punishers runner tagged up and scored making it a 2-1 game. The next hitter came up and struck out.

It was now the Sun Devils turn at the plate. The first hitter cranked a nice one and brought the runner on second home to make it a tie game with a runner on first. The next batter bunted and popped it up for an out....the next batter came up and hit a blooper over the third baseman's head.. the third baseman, left fielder and shortstop all watched the ball drop in the middle of them.. There were now runners on 1st and 2nd with one out... the next batter attempted a bunt and again popped it up to the pitcher for an out. The next batter came up with two outs and hit a pop fly to left/center area.. the Punishers fielders almost ran into each other and then both backed off so that the call dropped in between them... the Sun Devils scored and won the game. It was a great game!!! I was surprised to see so many routine mistakes from a supposedly top team.

Another great game was the Nemesis / Suncats game... I have never seen the SunCats play and was impressed by their 10 coaches and 16 players. That Suncats coach was going a bit crazy and it was fun to watch...Both teams hit and played well but Nemesis ended up winning this time around.

After seeing the rankings and seeing the Sun Devils play; I think they are WAY too low on Brackey's list. They lost in Vegas to Nemesis by 1 point and then the beat Punishers twice in the past two weeks... In my book that means that Punishers are ranked too high or the Sun Devils are ranked too low.

Did anyone else attend the tourney??? What other great games were played????

We saw the Punishers-Sun Devils game. What a game it was. We also saw the Hurricanes 98 team beat the Sun Devils. :o

As for the Punishers game, your post is not accurate as to what transpired. The leadoff batter for the Sun Devils did not crank a nice one to score the run. She bunted the ball and an errant throw by the Punishers scored the tying run. The next batter did pop up a bunt. The next batter did hit a shallow fly down the left field line. But give the batter props, she battled hard hitting at least half a dozen foul balls before blooping that one down the line. All 3 Punishers players chased the ball hard, but it just fell in no man's land 6 inches inside the line. I didnt see anybody stop and watch it drop. The next batter did pop up another bunt, so I guess we know that Sun Devils are good at popping up bunts. With 2 outs and runners on first and second, the next batter hit a fly ball to left center field. The outfielders did not stand around and watch the ball drop like you said. The left fielder and the center fielder collided with one another. The LF actually caught the ball and the collision caused the ball to pop out of her glove. A dramatic ending to say the least.

As Lefty Gomez once said: "I would rather be lucky than good."

However it happend... Punishers lost to a team ranked very low....two missed bloopers and a bad throw on the bunt??? If this does not move them down several spots then I dont know what will....

The funnny thing is that it is not a fluke because the Sun Devils beat them the week prior at the Victory friendly. (I know Coach Ed... it is only a friendly)

WORD!!

My DD's team played in another tournament this weekend and ended up going into ITB. We were only allowed 2 outs. Sounds like the above mentioned games gave each team their full 3 outs per inning.
Does this rule change from tournament to tournament???

Before you light the SunCATS scorekeepers car on fire.........let me correct you.

The Sun Devils played Punishers. The SunCATS played Nemesis.
