by Under the Radar » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:05 pm

Has anyone heard about a BILL that is going to be voted on in June that may shut down all California Community College Sports?

I hope it's not true.

Sports provide student-athletes with numerous life lessons (no wonder businesses love to see team sports listed in their resumes) and JC sports provide many athletes the opportunity to continue to play the game they love and possibly get at least 2 years of their education paid for.

That, to me, is worth more than knowing the "Pythagorean Theorum" or things that we teach in school and never use....jmo

Big diff between a true jr college and a community college - as far as I am concerned the community college's should not be throwing away our tax $ on very sub par sports programs. The vast majority of comminity college sports programs are student recreation and travel at our expense. Let the community colleges do what they are supposed to do - help students get to the next level and help older adults learn a trade or skill.

I work in an athletic department at a California Community College and have for almost 20 years. In these years about 10 to 20 percent of our athletes have gone on to receive Bachelors or Masters degrees. The percentage of the overall student population is much lower than this. Also many of our athletes have gone on to work in public safety positions. I would estimate another 5 to 10 percent.

As an employee at a California Community College Athletic Department it is a very scary time. There is a group in the legislature that is pushing to not allow for state funding of athletics at this level. If a school wanted to continue having athletics it would need to be privately funded.

Are athletics a waste of tax dollars as some think. In my mind, No. The lessons taught on an athletic field cannot be taught in a classroom.

Love the spin, in other words, this amounts to a 80 to 90% failure rate to get to the next level. I say cut the programs. When a player can take 8 quarters of softball electives just to be eligible to play on the community college team, I would say that is a waste of money, at least in CA it is.

I see your point, but a student athlete at the community college level is required to carry a full load of 12 units per semester and 9 of those units must be academic. So 3 units per semester can be devoted to sport electives as you put it. ;)

What is the difference between a community college and a JuCo college?

Instead of these left-wingers driving the state into the ground and threatening to kill and/or reduce services to the things that the paying public (i.e. taxpayers) use such as libraries, parks, school sports and tuition, and infrastructure upkeep to coerce the public into MORE tax raises when we are already among the most taxed people in the country they should look at the places where there is real abuse of tax dollars and go after that money first. By the way, I was in Arizona over the weekend to catch some spring training and gas was 55-60 cents a gallon cheaper over there and the highways were in great condition as well.
