MISSING, Softball Private Instructors – Who Really Cares about quality?
It’s amazing to me that there are people out there, who somehow claim to be “Hitting Coaches” or “Pitching Coaches” who do nothing to continue to grow in their knowledge of what they teach and most of you continue to Pay, Pay, Pay… without ever any consideration to what you are getting for your money. It’s weird to me that so many people can be so foolish with money and it’s sad that they would not investigate and research more about what SHOULD be being taught to their kids to give them the best results.
In the Private instructor’s defense, I don’t think most are malicious. I think a great deal of these so-called, experts set up their ideas and philosophies on what they thought was right, many, many years ago – and instead of growing with the times and utilizing technology, and changing their lesson plans to fit what we learned over the years, they instead spend countless hours – DEFENDING what they have taught for the last “20 years or more” and blaming their students, lack of success as “they aren’t practicing enough on their own”! I still hear hitting instructors teaching “steep bat paths, chopping down on the ball, spinning so hard that your slicing off the ball, and a bunch of other amazingly old outdated malarkey.
Oh, these same instructors do NOTHING to compel their students to Practice, (“when I see you next, you need to turn in a completed practice log at your next lesson, or don’t bother coming”)! You see, they can’t do that, because although they truly do care, it’s the MONEY that they CARE about more than anything else. Private instructors are the first to stand up and tell everyone that a kid that is getting good results takes lessons from them. Well, what about the other kids in his/her stable? Are they only responsible for good results? How bad the bad ones? Oh, it’s the kids fault, ‘cause they don’t practice enough- right?
In this age of video tape, slow motion capturing, skill comparison programs – if your private instructor is not taking advantage of these tools, then in my opinion, they are a waste of time and are nothing more that the latest “Elixir” salesman. Selling garbage 20 minute hitting or pitching lessons (which is also a JOKE! Does anyone really believe you can get anything accomplished in a 20 minute lesson?), and all the while you think your kid will end up at UCLA, because this guy had a kid, back in the day that was recruited by UCLA, so of course it’s a direct result of this instructor – right?
I suppose it’s also just a coincidence that they can give a quality lesson and fit THREE, of those 20 minute, 35.00-40.00 dollar quality lessons into an hour, which also just so happens to allow them to make 120.00 an hour, all of which is TAX FREE (at least Tax Free to them, you paid taxes on it when you worked for it)!
Listen, I am all for keeping as much of the money we EARN as we can, but the emphasis should be on the word EARN. It’s these crack pot, old fashioned, non-technology based, ego-maniacs who call themselves a Softball Private Instructor, that so many of you hold out to be so precious, and knowledgeable – when all the while they are given you some 1980’s version of a lesson they heard some other fool give 30 years ago – and you my friend are buying it, hook, line and sinker…and all this helps softball stay years behind Baseball.
Oh, and if your hitting coach is STILL using a pitching machine AND feeding it himself while giving you a hitting lesson, RUN, don’t walk the heck out of that lesson and find yourself someone that will take the time to “flip” you the ball or pitch to you or have someone else flip the ball to you (like MLB baseball players do so much in the off season). But good luck finding one because you see, these kind of instructor are FEW and far between, because this would actually take WORK to do, and they’re ONLY making 120.00 per hour – so you can’t expect too much from them or for them to take PRIDE in what they are teaching ( or can you?)!
