unreported sub

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by morgan » Thu Jan 27, 2011 10:59 pm

ASA rules. One out, runners on 1 & 2. Starter re-enters to hit, but not reported back in by coach. Grounder to 2B, throw goes home (wild), one run scores, runner to 3, BR to 2. We challenge BR immediately as unreported re-entry. Umps agree and declare batter out, but allow result of play to stand.

I thought all runners should be sent back, but (all 3) umps were clear that the play stands. I didn't protest, my 1st priority at that point was not to blow the game (we did). But after the fact, I have asked several experienced umps, majority (not all) have said runners return to bases occupied at start of play. What gives?

ASA 4-6-C-3. If discovered before a pitch, legal or illegal is thrown, all runners return to the base occupied prior to the batted ball, batter is out and officially entered into game.

Maybe it's just me but does anyone else have a problem with trying to benefit by this type of technicality? Does it really do anything for the sport or the players playing?

I'm okay with reporting BOO, and other violations that give the other team an advantage. Not sure how benefiting from an unreported (but legal) sub makes anyone better. I guess it's the only way to teach the offending coach the importance of following the reporting rules.

I'm sorry, play started with runners on 1 & 3, we were up one in bottom of last inning, 2b was trying to cut off tying run at plate.

The reasons for requiring reporting of subs is to make sure that substitutions are 1) to allow the umpire to make sure the substitutions are, in fact, legal, 2) to give the opposing team legal notice, which may allow them to make a strategic adjustment, and 3) to notify the scorekeepers and statisticians, so they can maintain an accurate accounting. While failing to report a legal sub may simply be an oversight, it can also be part of failing to report illegal substitutions, as well.

Suppose I put a better defensive player in for my starting 3B; when I want more offense, I re-enter my starter. If it isn't reported, and possibly not noticed, maybe I will then put the better defensive player back in, also unreported. Next time that spot in the batting order comes up, what keeps me from re-entering the starter a second time? Is there anything on the official lineup maintained by the umpire which indicates this is now illegal? What proof does the opposing team have, if they even noticed, if left unappealed the last time(s)?

Wouldn't that depend on who the player was? Could it be that the defense or the pitches called may have been different had the coach been aware of the re-entry?

I don't see a team benefiting, but a team failing to benefit by failing to abid by the rules.
