Roster????

DD plays for team #1 and has not qualified for nationals. Would like to go to nationals with team #2. Question, does DD have to play in a championship tournament with team # 2 or can she play in any tournament with # 2 to be added to their official roster ? Or would that be like a pick up player? Team #2 has qualified and is out of DD's region. Also what are the rules for in your region for being added to a roster? Thanks for any help

If Team A is not going to enter championship play (metros, regionals, etc), she can be added as a pickup player for nationals if Team B is in the same association as Team A. For example, Team A is registered as a Houston metro team, Team B has to be a Houston metro team.

You can get around this if Team A is willing to release her and Team B adds her to their regular roster. Then you avoid any age restrictions (other than eligibility of course) or association restrictions. She can still play with Team A as a pickup player in any non-qualifying tournament

Go to ASA's website, pull up ASA code, and it starts on page 51.

If ever in doubt, consult your JO comish. Better safe than 2-yr-suspension sorry.

Thank you 3bsnag. If team B is out of your association is it possible to play with that team in nationals? I am assuming roster has been sent to nationals for team B since they have qualified.

No, they have to be within your association.

I'll give you my example:
DD is 12 and her team is a 14U Ft Worth metro team. In case team didn't make it, I wanted her to pickup for 12U or 14U Nationals. The answers I got (and looked up in ASA code), are that she can only pick up for a 14U Ft Worth metro team for Nationals. She can't go down in age (12U) and can't go with a Dallas metro team either. The 3 allowed pickups have to be in the same age, classification, and association.

This doesn't hold true if you are talking Gold though, the teams just have to be in the same region (7).

Kinda stinks for us since we're so close and play with Dallas metro teams every weekend, but good for qualifying since each metro gets berths.

If both teams coaches are willing, there's nothing wrong with a roster change. Good luck!

So if team A ( being from Houston ) is willing to release DD and team B ( being from Dallas) is willing to put DD on roster, you are saying cant happen because it is out of our association/region?

Sorry, I misunderstood the 2nd post.

If she's released and put on another roster, that team could be from Maine, it doesn't matter. All these rules only apply to pick up players.

To 3bsnag: What if the team DD wants to be released from has played in a Qualifier (ex. HOF)? The rules seem very hard to get around on this. I don't see any exceptions in the ASA Code, but surely someone has encountered this problem.

We're getting way over my pay grade here.

A couple of notes though if someone is going to call their JO:

Article 503 says that the releasing team (Team A) can't be "eligible for championship play". Does that mean by choice too? If Team A just decides not participate in any other qualifiers and has not already rec'd their berth, can a roster change occur?

Article 513 says that a team that has qualified for the National Championship can not adjust their roster if they earned their berth at a National Qualifier. However it doesn't say you can't change your roster if you received your berth through metro's, HOF, or regionals.

Once I found out we couldn't pick up unless it was a 14 team in our assoc., I gave up searching for answers.
