10u Shake Up's?

by ontheblack » Fri Dec 31, 2010 3:56 pm

Everything is so serious now with the college exposure, nationals, and etc....But I have learned to keep my mouth shut a lot more and that is thanks to the DD's younger years and looking back at how foolish I acted so that it doesn't happen now. I would like to think that I am the wiser now.

The mistakes that you might have made are learning curves for you and just like you had the right to make them, the 10u parents today have those same rights.
The battle of getting there is just as important as the battle of being there IMO. So if you really care about the 10u kids and you are truly trying to help them and not just attempting to prove that you have been there and done that (which I believe is the case most of the time), then try giving a little insightful advice rather than looking down your nose at them. JMO for what it is worth.

Excellent points. My take:
1. IMO, this is now just like soccer at this age - just be careful to let your kid make the choices and dont pressure them into one sport or another at this age.
2. 10u parents are the new 12u - they take TB way to seriously considering the age.
3. Many of these girls will be out of the sport by 14u, so dont rob them of these important years - make sure they have balance and have the opportunity to play other sports.
4. As well as you know (or think you know) your kid - the signs of burnout are generally recognized by parents a bit late.
5. Campbell is the exception not the rule, and so are the kids that play for him. If all 10U parents had to have their kid play for him for one year, most would be completely different after that. He has this innate ability to speed up the learning curve for all involved.

Uncle Rico wrote:Hot Wheels, I typically agree with your insight and experience, but here I think you off. Playing 10u travel is not a mistake for all players, as you state. There are many good examples of players that started in 10's and are now still happily playing at the college level. Look at some of Campbell's teams over the years that have grown from 10's to college is impressive. Parents need to make sure their daughters have balance in their life and not treat 10u as if it is life or death importance. As with any activity, some girls are ready at 10 where as others should probably wait a bit.

Absolutely! I don't think that I have seen it written any better.

There is going to be 10u TB and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Wouldn't it be wiser to give advice on the experience that some of you have based on the mistakes that you feel you made rather than try and humiliate all the 10u parents everytime they post? That is to say, if you were ever a 10u TB parent. I know that looking back at the 10u years, there is nothing that I would do different other than the way I acted sometimes. I wouldn't trade my DD's 10u years for anything and I don't think she would either. 10U stars of today are tomorrows drop outs. Relax, you have no idea what is going to happen. My kid played rec at 10u then moved to TB. She was the last girl playing TB from her first year at 10u TB. She was probably the worst on the team at that time, and parents were crazy then thinking their kid was the next big thing. Now they are at the mall doing jack, and whatever else their parents dont know about. Some starting lives or working the local fast food. By 14u most of them were surpassed because they had 'daddy attitudes' from playing under dad for to long or thinking they were so great and didnt have to work (already at 10-12U!!!). Or development /size slowed down. The kid throwing 50 at 10s still was throwin 50 at 14u and was now getting rocked. I've seen it all. I think the 'yodas' are just trying to say enjoy the ride, lay off the umpires, push the kid MILDLY to get better so that the 'love' develops as it should and not forced down their throat. From another 'yoda' whose kid has moved on to college ball. Lastly....dont worry about shakeups at 10u , just to get back to the OP's question!

One thing I know for a fact that Travel Ball is not the same ! We can start @ the Mighty 12u where we have over a hundred teams and only around 30 are competitive if that!! Also look @ your 12 u rankings where u have former 10u teams(99) ranked higher then 2nd year 12's...So like My Tio Rico   ...Its all about your kid and how you raise them in sports period !!! WORD !!

P.S I have witness 10u team beat 12's !!!!! FYI
