CATCH OR HOMERUN....Let it begin

What's on your mind?

by DDsNbr1Fan » Sat Aug 14, 2010 10:05 pm

I was sitting in the left field grass area and saw the player contact the fence on the run and reaching about 2-3 feet past the fence with her glove to make the catch..all as the fence was falling. Not sure of what the rule states...just saying what I saw from my angle.

Great hit by Sarah from the Athletics and a great catch by the outfielder!

i agree!!!she caught it then got up on the field side of the fence. if she would have ended up beyond it?HR

the right ruling was made in CO in July, TX Storm Elite robbed OK Force, find that umpire.

All I am saying is that temp fencing sucks. We play lots of ball on 200 or 210 fields - with warning tracks. The fact that this level of game is played on a field with temp fencing - creating the HR question in the first place - is very disappointing.

I have only been to the beach in Huntington - but I am surprised in the hot bed of fastpitch there is not a legit softball specific field.

Still a great game to watch - had a great summer ourselves and already looking forward to volleyball and basketball being over :D

At least that is how it ws explained to me.
As to the poster that questioned temporary fences, where have you been. That is the only types of fences we get in travel ball, if we are lucky. Some people will find fly shit in a bag of free money

Then it was explained wrong to you. The only difference between ASA and NFHS on sucha play is that a fielder cannot make a legal catch standing on a collapsible fence the is flat on the ground. And the rule is specific to "horrizontal" to the ground. Partially down is not included as an exclusion to a legal catch.

The rule is posted on the umpire's board.

spaz they don't have pvc fencing at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

If the California softball gods are gonna put on this event you think the Championship game would not be decided by temporary fencing.

I agree a lot of tournaments use temporary fencing but this tournament was not advertised as a friendly, coolege look or just another tournament. It was suppose to be A National Championship Tournament.

First year and they already screwd it up. Next year they may have to change it from Premier to So CAL Championship.Teams from rest of country may not be willing to travel to SO CAL to play in a tournament where no true champion can be crowned.

GOLD NATIONALS DON"T SOUND SO BAD NOW.

If the infield is skinned and there is no mound, it's a legitimate softball field. The field is very likely also used for slow pitch.

Temporary fencing didn't determine the game, the umpires interpretation of the rule did. If there would have been permanent fencing we wouldn't be having this conversation. The ball would have been over the fence and out of reach, and instead of reinstalling the fencing and continuing, we may have seen a delay in play waiting for the ambulance to take that girl away for treatment based on how hard she hit it. I'll take the temp. fencing, runner up finish, and my dd riding home with me safe and sound after the game anytime.

The tournament in its infancy can sure use a little tweaking in some area's, but the big difference is the staff at Premier are willing to listen and make those adjustments as needed.Try and get a hold of ASA and see where that get's you.

Oh yea, and ASA Gold Nationals in BFE, or Premier in beautiful sunny souther California :) ,
the choice is yours. I know where I'm shooting for next year. :ugeek:

WOW - Did not know talking about temp fencing was so violent a conversation. I had no intention of "hateing". Everything else about the Premier was great - use of the internet for updates - terrific info on stats, rosters, etc... and the one game on TV was great. I woulda watched several if they had been available. We had a local area team in the tourney and it was great to know what was going on.

So my only thought was how much better it would be on a fastpitch specific field. We played most of our tourneys - including state - on regulation fields with fences and warning tracks in most cases. Our version of nationals in ASA had temp fencing - and along with several other things - there is plenty more to gripe about with ASA then what I could see on Premier.

I was watching LL baseball on ESPN tonite from San Bernandino. Right sized field - much more legit. Just saying - softball needs the same at the top levels.

Unfortunately the angles on TV were not correct to see - I will trust the left field testimony above - but I wish there woulda been a warning track and a fence to find out if it were a HR or great catch. Every night ESPN shows catches that were not gonna be made...

I am not from Texas BTW

On another note - we mostly avoid ASA during the season due to all of the things to hate about ASA. Nationals seem to be held hostage by ASA - so I welcome Premier, USSSA, and anyone else who can force ASA to at least teach TD's how to use the internet and spreadsheets.

How's that for hateing on ASA?
