Tryout Dates Too Early?

I saw this on eteamz this morning:

"Houston ASA teams are governed by the Greater Houston Youth Softball Association Code. The earliest legal tryout date for Houston ASA teams is Saturday, August 21, 2010. Violators are subject to disqualification per the GHYSA Code. Please review the following section of the GHYSA Code."

"9.04 ILLEGAL TRYOUTS - No team can conduct a Team Tryout until the second Saturday following the completion of the [ASA] National Championship Finals in the age the team will be participating for the next playing season. Any team meeting, practice or other function where a team invites a player not on the team’s current roster will not be allowed and will be considered a tryout."

Does each ASA association set its own dates for when tryouts can and cannot be held?

Thought this seemed a little harsh. It also seems to give teams who don't play ASA an advantage by having earlier tryouts. But perhaps there is a reason for this?

its set by the national asa board. not regional. you can always play usfa vtd ifa usssa though.

I am assuming to give the girls a break. After over 150 games this year, I know mine needs it.

Lord knows the parents need one, too.

If a team is unable to be sanctioned ASA then mostly I wouldn't want my DD playing for them. At this point, ASA is still the organization that gets the girls seen. Premier is up and running and I think will be the next stop for 16 and 18U and USFA is great for the younger teams, but ASA still gets the job done whether people like it or not. This might hurt 10U tryouts, but can't imagine a really quality older girl (12U, 14U or older) playing for a team that CAN'T be ASA sanctioned, so can't imagine that it hurts the ASA Houston teams that much. JMO.

Our tryouts are that same weekend (21st) and it was done to give everyone a break. We feel that girls for the most part want to play for quality teams and that is what we provide. Most won't make their decisions until they have hit several tryouts and seen a couple of teams. If they go to one tryout and jump on that spot that is offered then she probably wasn't the one for us anyway. We have always leaned to this policy and are very happy with the team we have built over the last 3 years.

Houston Metro ASA is the only area that has this rule and NO it is not in the ASA code...it is simply a rule that Houston Metro made up...for what ever reason.

SO STOP EMAILING PEOPLE ABOUT ILLEGAL TRYOUTS!!!"

Sounds like Houston metro ASA is trying to play spoiler to those teams already holding tryouts. Interesting.

This rule only applies to teams sanctioned under Houston ASA Metro only. Anybody sanctioned under any Texas ASA district or any other Metro is ok to have tryouts whenever they wish.
