What's on your mind?

That coach is a complete and utter ASSHAT who has absolutely no business coaching children. You're on his team and want to defend him? Rationalize away. I'm certain you would feel the same way if one of your kid's teachers acted like that. Oh wait. Thats different. Education is far LESS important than a bunch of 12 year olds playing a game. Yeah, like that behavior would fly if a teacher pulled that emotionally unstable act and defended his assinine behavior by saying he was trying to motivate his students. That would be the end of that teacher's career unless he left the area and found a job where they didn't know he had EVER pulled that kind of stunt.

I will never ceased to be amazed at what parents condone in the context of sports but in absolutely no other context. But then again, there is no shortage of pitiful souls who long to be on reality TV.

Obviously you have never played any organized sport of any kind. If you think for one minute that coaches are all smiles and kisses you would be crazy.Watch a college football game on tv and let them show clipboards, hats etc. being thrown or broken.

Don't comment on things you know nothing about.

What do you know about me?

I no longer have much time to post any more. So ...

Do I think the kids experienced a life altering event? Nope. Is that now the criteria for acceptance? Is emotional trauma?

My son has always listened to any music he has wanted to listen to, including the most misogynistic crap one can imagine. He has always played some the most violent/graphic video games (Mortal Kombat meat hooks - yum yum). At 20 years old, he has shown absolutely no interest in hurting anyone and I would be very surprised if he will EVER puts his hands on a women in anger. I suspect the reason is the influence from living with my wife and I for 20 years. Skarp, I believe you have stated that you will not allow your daughter to listen to certain songs. Because she will be harmed by the experience? In what way? Why do so many people worry about what songs their kids listen to and which video games their kids play? Because they believe that is what is best for THEIR kids. I have no problem with that.

I suspect that this coach is a testicularly challenged idiot who put on giant douche bag display because a bunch of 12 year old girls tried their best in a championship game and lost. They denied him the opportunity to suck in his stomach, puff out his man boobs and strut in the limelight of adoring parents to accept the championship trophy and cement his place in the pantheon of great Tennessee 12 year old girls softball coaches. Driven by the desire to motivate? I'm not buying. Driven by disappointment and his own damaged ego? Much more likely. Go get a penile implant and and return to coaching when 12 year old children don't have to have their best efforts rewarded with your egocentric, emotionally unstable displays of douche baggery.

Ahh, probably another post I will regret.

DD had a coach that smashed a trophy. Finished our commitment and then left the team.

I am also not a fan of end zone celebrations - anyone remember Barry Sanders? Classy guy on the field. Really dislike all the tugging on the Jerseys when a shots re made in basketball. Loved the whole Coach Carter thing about celbrating successful shoe tying.

Why we're not a superpower? How about why people can't work together anymore to compromise? How the only way to get a party's nomination is to be at the most extreme end of the spectrum? What's wrong with reating people with the respect that I would appreciate in return?

Playing for trophy smashing coaches is everyone's perogative, certainly not my or my DDs' choice.

Don't see any reason a coach can't be a good caoch and a classy guy. Smashing trophies under any circumstances doesn't strike me a particularly classy.

Maybe. But you also supplied me with the new phrase of the week, "Douche Baggery". I'm gonna be a real hit at practice!

Briefly, yes--I believe that immersing oneself into the more vile aspects of our culture is, over time, harmful. That is a much different thing than playing for a harsh or mildly abusive coach, which is less about the kid's choices and values than it is about how she learns to deal with the choices of (or environment created by) others. The first destroys character, whereas the second builds it.

In a perfect world, every coach would be good and classy. But many are classy and awful, and many who are good are not classy at all. Far fewer are both good and classy. Unfortunately, a strong dose of competitiveness (which is absolutely necessary for a good coach to have) usually comes at the expense of a little bit of personal class--at least where competition itself is concerned. This is especially true where young, less mature coaches are concerned. It's just the nature of the thing.

And the fact is that some kids respond much better (in terms of performance and development) to a harsh, demanding environment. Not only is fear a useful motivator for most kids, it's the only effective motivator for a certain percentage of them. So, while I agree that my kid wouldn't play for that coach for long, I can understand why such coaches often have a loyal following of girls and parents. I know several girls who really need that type of environment to achieve their best.

The message and ideas in some current music is very much telling, especially young women, to lead a much more permissive/submissive life. Someone mentioned education earlier. There are things being taught to youth in our schools that are much more harmful than this coach smashing the trophy.

First of all, if you have not coached a 12U team that has made an attempt at going to Nationals, then it is just too easy to second guess/question someone's actions. As I have said, even the great John Wooden was known for being very aggressive toward officials early in his career, it was only after growing and learning. After going through the ringer a couple of times, that he learned a better way to behave. That is what these coaches are doing. growing/learning, making mistakes, learning from them.

How many times have you been on the golf course and see the guy toss his whole golf bag in the lake? Is is it douche-baggery? Yes, absolutely. Is it someone letting the competitive side get the better of the class side? Yes, absolutely. It is also frickin hilarious? Yes.

Skarp, Battle, AlwaysImprove, you all make some good points.
I guess I will say it again, I wouldn't want my kid on that team.
Did I feel as passionate about this the first time through with my older daughter?
No I didn't.
In fact, in the rec league we were in, I practically begged the resident screamer coach to draft my kid.
I have a different perspective now from going through it once before.
Maybe that's what this guy is going through now, I don't know.

You are right, the screamer coaches do attract a loyal, almost fanatical following.
Just not me or my kid.

I would have loved to be leaning on a fence watching this guy in action.
My entertainment would have been tempered somewhat knowing the girls were also watching.
But yeah, ridiculous Douche Baggery does make for good entertainment.
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.
