I think I know who these young ladies are, but who are the two Team Akedema girls who are listed as Verballed to Purdue. One is Ali and the other is Darcy, class of 2011. What exactly does verballed mean. I was thinking about calling a press conference with the newspaper and local tv station and having my daughter "Verbal" to UCLA!!!!!!! On second thought, forget the paper!!! They don't give a hoot in a holler about local softball. They won't even print their statistics in the paper. Any thoughts???

I heard you mouthing off at the tournament yesterday about how you created this thread. You are from the Indy Crush and I think you should take the time to educate yourself on the college recruiting process, or any subject for that matter, before you spout off dumb ass comments such as the one above. A verbal is an agreement from the college coach to the player.

Thanks Big Daddy for the totally edifying response to my question. I was merely being "tongue in cheek" when asking this question. However, I did find the other response that guided me to an NCAA website to be the most helpful. Mostly, I was just making light of the Indy Star for their lack of coverage for the deserving softball players of central Indiana. I really wanted to know if Verballed meant: they applied and were accepted to the University, or if there was monetary inducement, if the coach really covets them, or if they have to walk on one year and have money offered the following year, just things of this nature.

A verbal commitment means that the school has made an offer to you and you have accepted the offer (scholarship). Because you can not officially sign your scholarship papers for the school and NCAA until a certain date each year the official signing day for Division 1 schools is usually in November, you can only say that you are making a verbal commitment. You typically only see a verbal commitment in Division 1 softball and the scholarship money is typically over 50%.

I think this is a good example of why some talented softball players in central Indiana do not ascend to the better college softball programs - uneducated parents; i.e., parents who stand in the way of their daughter's success, because (a) they refuse to educate themselves on the process until it is far too late; (b) they refuse to recognize that there are multiple opportunities to gain exposure outside of central Indiana; and (c) they refuse to recognize that college coaches recruit parents or, better said, some kids don't get recruited because of their parents.

If your daughter is a senior and you're asking these types of questions now, your daughter has likely missed her opportunity, but don't blame her or others - blame yourself. It appears that the parents and coach(es) of Ali and Darcy were several steps ahead of you. There is no need to be jealous, really. Do you really consider it appropriate to make a distasteful statement about someone else's success? Do you think that a college coach would consider your remarks appropriate in any setting?

If you are only concerned about the local news coverage, write a letter to the editor of the local paper, don't call kids out in this forum. I congratulate Ali and Darcy on receiving their scholarship offers from Purdue and for verbally accepting the same. In five months they can formalize their commitments.

Well said Skidoo! I've been around long enough to know that things can get a little ugly once these kids who have worked so hard enter the recruiting world. Food for thought - If you are one of those idiots like Trojan who is thinking about getting on a public forum, identifying two kids by name and then diminishing their accomplishments for all the world to see, keep one thing in mind. These are 16 year-old kids! Why in the world any adult would go out of his way to attempt to ridicule two 16 year-old kids who he probably doesn't even know is beyond me.

Skidoo and Mcgeever. I sincerely agree that kudos go out to these girls for their accomplishments for sure. I still just wanted to know what Verballing was about. I apoligize for mentioning names. Live and Learn, hopefully. Their accomplishments were listed on the Team Akadema Tournament website for the past weekend. So it was public. Thanks to one and all for the comments. Especially the ones who addressed the Verbal issue. My sincere apologies to the young ladies and families if there were hurt feelings, etc... Actually, we have been looking at every state around Indiana more so than in state. So, we have not necessarily limited ourselves in this fashion.
