All-District All-State announced

Please educate a rookie. What's the difference between all-district and all-state. I assume all-state is what it means - players from across the entire state. But what is all-district? The runner-ups?

The top five players (1-5) in their district, as voted on by coaches in that district, are 1st team all state. The next 5 players (6-10) are 2nd team all state. The next five players (11-15) are 3rd team all state. I believe the next fifteen girls (16-30) are all district. Essentially, the sixth best player in a certain district could be the No. 1 player in another district; but, this is current process we have.

In order to be an All Star, a player must be a senior and their coach must submit certain info to district leaders (i.e. $100). The top six or seven seniors from each district make the All Star team. The sixth senior doesn't have to be in the top 15 in their district, and they still would make the All Star team.

Hey Jim! The $100 down payment can come from any source (parent, coach, program budget, etc), but it must be submitted by a certain date. If district leaders do not receive the $100, then a player cannot be nominated for the all star team. If a player's coach submits the $100 on time, and that player is not voted onto the all star team, the $100 check is given back at the district meeting. Make sense?

What is the $100 fee for? I know there are uniforms for the North/South all-star game, and there was no fee for that, but maybe that is what the $100 is really for. The only fee asked for was for additional people, other than the player, to the banquet Friday night.

The $100 fee is for the player and her parents to attend the dinner, uniforms etc.. There is also hotel cost. Typically the school puts up the money(if budgeted), but I've heard in some cases if there multiple players from the school, they have to find a sponsor or comes out of mom and dads pocket.
Everybody plays, everybody hits. Pitchers throw 3 innings, and maybe 2 at bats max. All while you're missing some good travel action.

Would someone please tell IHSAA/IGSCA to have this event during school season!

Ok, I see where it could cost $100.00 if the kid makes it on the team, and it now makes sense, since they get it back if not selected.

There are a lot of things that I don't understand about this selection process, so I guess I need to be educated by the HB veterans as well. First, do statistics matter or is the selection process for All-State, All-District, etc., a popularity contest and/or a political process? It sounds as if statistics or a "body of work" really don't matter too much. Second, is it truly all on the HS coach to determine if a player is ultimately selected and on which team? If so, how is that fair to a kid that out performs a coach's "pet"? Third, why would other coaches who see the girls play not step in to challenge a coach who is not supporting the better players on his or her team? Seems to me that opposing coaches are far more objective and should be far more selective when it comes to deciding who ends up where on these teams. Finally, assuming this is not done, why not place more emphasis on what an opposing coach has to say versus a coach who plays favorites. literally and figureatively? In the end, the college coaches will ultimately decide who the better players are, but for those kids that work hard for their schools and who would like to receive some recognition, but don't, this process can be a real disheartening experience.
