HYDRATION

monkeysmom wrote:Actually as I stated the ammonia spirits is for the ice towels to keep the girls from getting overheated, not to treat hydration. We used the ammonia spirits to keep the bacteria count down and the water stayed colder for longer (believe it or not). We transitioned to only ice and water because the ammonia spirits are not easy to find, it is not the ammonia you find on your cleaning isle at walmart.

AND "As a nurse, I would love to hear your medical explanation" sarcastic much? Don't make me get out my inner beaaatcchh!

I wasn't being sarcastic. I am not a nurse and assumed that because you are you could give me a legitimate explanation. I honestly want to know how ammonia stops one from becoming overheated. Are you saying that the "correct formula" of ammonia and water is simply for bacterial reasons?

The ammonia spirits do not keep one from getting overheated, the ice and water on towels on the head, face and neck help do that in addition to proper hydration. The ammonia is simply there to help keep the bacteria down and it also keeps the water colder for longer. You are dealing with a communal ice chest with multiple girls reaching in, grabbing a towel. You cannot use bleach as this irritates the eyes and skin and they don't like the smell of vinegar which would also help keep the bacteria count down. In S Texas the ice towels are an absolute must as soon as it gets over 90. And again, monitoring so there is no redunking (ewwww) they use the towel, they put in a dirty bag and get another. My apologies if you were not being sarcastic you see I am used to the Frito retardo on this site.

I truly dont know why I bother with you Frito but you are incorrect. Water only will NOT properly hydrate in extreme heat with activity no mater how much you drink. Lots of water in the heat/activity ratio and you could actually cause yourself harm by diluting already low levels of electrolytes. You need to replace the electrolytes lost while sweating which is why girls should alternate between gatoraide and water. And watch it Frito, nurses are very twisted. One nurse can cause you pain in ways you can only imagine and two nurses...well that's a party.

This is a very serious subject Frito and you have to make fun of it too. Your such an ass. Monkeys parents are both very good people but you choose to chastise them just as you do everybody else on here. Why don't you get a life and stay the heck off of here? You are worthless to anybody on here and probably to your dd's team too. I bet they would love you for the ignorant things you say on here.

And a big thank you to Texdocbay for posting very important info. As it starts to warm up in S Texas, hydration and heat exposure become a significant issue. If I see one more parent give their "sluggish" child a monster or red bull I will lose it. Please give them fruit (good carbs) with a little protein (cheese stick) and plenty of fluids and gatoraide.

I can appreciate all of the advice on this subject. About 2 weeks ago, one of the first weekends it hit 90 in the dfw. My dd, who is a catcher was on her 4th game of the day, which has been nothing out of the ordinary for the last couple of years, came up to me in between innings and jokingly said " Dad it's hot I feel like I am going to have a heat stroke" then cracked a joke and went in the dugout put some rags on her head and drank some water, 5 minutes later she came back in the dugout said she felt dizzy, started to take her gear off, and began hyperventilating! We tried having her breath in a bag, put ice under her arms, on her neck, and just could not get her to slow her breathing down. This really scared her because she had never had this happen, and the more scared she got the worse it got. We rushed her to the hospital, and as soon as they put a IV in her she popped right back up and felt fine. The doctor said that she had got dehydrated!! And everything else was a result of that. Obviously, she and I must do a better job to make sure she stays hydrated! But also, the biggest piece of advice I can give out of all of this is, listen to your kid, and watch for any signs! Sometimes they may be telling you something without realizing they are! I would never want anyone to go thru what we went thru that day!! Great Topic!! Good luck to all in the Texas heat!!
