Our team manager found out, from ASA, that if we participate in States and win a birth, our team would be EXPECTED to attend ASA Nationals in Tennessee. If we chose not to attend, ASA could suspend our coaches for one year. We also heard from other sources that if we chose not to attend, there could be sanctions for our team next year including our team being banned from nationals next year.
We’re not sure if those are just threats, but now I see why teams, not intending to go on to ASA Nationals, are choosing not to attend States as a warm-up for other national tournaments
This is ASA Championship play. So if you succeed in proceeding in championship play of course it is expected you to go to the next level of advancement (Nationals). If you just want a weekend tournament do Triple Crown. Keep in mind though that there are only 4 national berths for 10U. I expect all of the top 7 teams and FC to be there so I would expect those 4 berths to go to 4 of those 8 teams assuming what has played out at Paddy's, Fresno and MDC plays out in a couple of weeks.
This is something the Team manager should've explained as well as a conversation the parent had with the coach privately as far as goals for the team and what the family wants for their daughter. To be honest, my family is a family of 6 and being on a team going to Nationals or even Western's isn't for us, my other kids do not do softball (anymore) and isn't fair for them to get dragged along. We also went to TN on a separate vacation 3yrs ago and once was enough for us. Triple Crown however suits us very well based on the age of our kids and we're still debating on going...
Every family and team is different.
