From an umpire that sees a lot of games in South Texas:
The Peppers are the team to beat in South Texas. Their pitchers are both the "real deal"!! I would put their lead off hitter in a race against any other 14 year old in the COUNTRY home to first. She is CRAZY fast. The rest of the team is solid everywhere. Nothing else "flashy" but they don't make many mistakes.
The Tazers are solid. They are mostly a '93 team and play good solid softball. Coach is kind of an a-hole, but he puts a quality product on the field. They hit the ball really well and if you make a mistake, they will beat your brains in! Leadoff batter/SS one of the best players in the area. They do not stand out in any area, but they do not make a lot of mistakes.
The Hawks are a new team, but they do a lot of stuff pretty well. I assure you, they do not have a pitcher that throws 60. I saw them all this weekend and they are solid and throw strikes and let the defense work for them, but there was no one throwing 60. Their outfield can flat go get it. I saw three diving catches in ONE game from them, and then a few GREAT relay throws for outs on the bases. Catcher is a firecracker and full of spunk. She is a lot of fun to work behind. VERY aggressive team.
Bomb Squad showed me a lot this weekend. They played some good softball. They didn't do anything remarkably, they just "got it done" when they had to. Timely hitting and mistake free defense for the most part. Ran out of gas against the Peppers in the championship game, but they never gave up. Their SS was the best I saw in the tournament. Very heads up little player. Saw her get a force out with a flip to 2B from her glove on a ball hit behind 2B.
I have not really seen a lot of other teams that are worth talking about from South Texas. The Peppers are the strongest pitching team I have seen down here. There are some games that they can "coast" and still win. The Tazers, Hawks and Bomb Squad are not going to blow anyone away with their pitching, they have to rely more on their defense.
