Any kid who participates in extracurricular activities should pay the cost of the activity (softball, band, etc...especially football). If a parent can't pay, then an opportunity to 'work' in lieu of fees should be provided to the student or parent. School administrators (with current funding) should be focusing on what they obviously aren't doing....teaching!

I am curious what you mean by "teaching"?

Let's start with a good foundation for someone to go out and make a decent living. Band, softball, cheer are all wonderful activities...and I love my football, but none will pay the rent. More importantly, the real competition is in the workplace. If our kids can't keep up w/ other kids in the world (who get better educations), then this great country of ours will fade quicker than we think.

I am curious if you are a teacher yourself? This is probably not the place to have this debate, but I am just curious.

I will give you that sports have somewhat become out of control. But to say sports does not help a child develop skills that can be utilized in the "workplace", is inaccurate. I would venture to say most successful individuals have a sports background in one manner. My life was not shaped by the required 4 years of Spanish as much as it was from the football coach that made us run till we puked. 20+ years later, I remember his name, couldn't tell you the Spanish teachers name.

This was the argument I was trying to avoid. The"administrators waste tax dollars, blah, blah, blah". I would venture to guess if you have made that statement you are probably not a teacher or adminstrator. If you would like to complain about the waste of tax dollars, talk to your local govenor. Most sporting programs will run off of both budgetted funding AND the money brought in from other sports (concessions, tickets, etc.). I competely agree with sidd in that I would bet that the majority of successful people in their careers were involved in sports in some way.

This would be a false statement. Very few extracurricular programs are break even or fund themselves completely. AND no one said that sports adversely affected our kids. I believe the question was (is)...who's should pay for it?

So....questions to your reply...

The kid who doesn't participate in sports should help pay for those that do?

The schools today are doing their job teaching our kids?

..and please don't misunderstand this in any way that I'm giving parents a free pass on taking responsibility for their kid's education. My experience is from schools 20-30 years ago and what we have today. There's simply no comparison IMO
