Travel vs School?

Manning's offense is centered around him making changes to plays and more so with him than most other QBs. If the coach knows that the girls are thinking on their feet and changing the call, then fine. But, the fastest way to find yourself getting a drink of water while the rest of the team is on the field is to change a HS coach's call because the mentality in HS is "coach knows best". Right or wrong. So no, I don't applaud an insider between the girls and making the coach look foolish but I do applaud a coach teaching the girls to think on their feet. I'm glad that it worked out for John's dd but I'm afraid that it wouldn't be the case with most DDs so advocating this is rediculous.

Smart girls never let it be known that they changed a call or improvised - they will come in and say 'hey coach-great call' in the case of high school. In the case of my team, the girls will come in the dugout and tease me about it - that is when it works, when it doesnt, I am real sure they keep it to themselves.

To add, the object is to win the game not make fun of the coach, except when its me, and even in that case, they keep it in the dugout.

So, your advise for someone who has a dd going into high school is......If you don't like the HS coach's call (based on your TB experience) then come up with some secret signals (unknowing to the coach) and change it? Just be smart enough not to get caught and by all means, win?

Not at all. I would never advise any other team's kids to go against their high school coach. The goal of competition is to win. WEIT.

I don't think you are getting the whole picture here, In DD's case the coach has fallen in love with a certain pitch, Batter sets-up away from the plate looking for an inside pitch, Coach calls for screw (inside) Catcher calls for a curve on the outside.......STRIKE 3 go take a seat, Pitcher & catcher tell coach she just missed the spot

Although I do believe (as Donnie does) is to win. Its just that I would be afraid of this situation..... Coach has scouted a team and has noticed that this particular batter has figured out or has been taught how to bait a pitch and is pretty successful in doing so. She walks to the plate and sets up with her hands high, very open stance and is off the plate. Coach calls a inside change up. Catcher changes to an outside drop. Just as the pitcher starts her motion the batter closes up, drops her hands and jacks one to center right for a triple and with a runner on first scores the winning run.
I think that in this case the coach would be able to distinguish between a change and a drop and this would set off a red flag that there is some insubordination going on. HS coaches have got to know this happens.

I do understand what yall are saying it's just that HS is so political anyway and HS coaches (if they are like the ones I know) would have a field day if the player gets caught. JMO though. Yall seem to be successful with your DDs so my eyes are wide open and yall's stand on this is pretty interesting. If you ARE going to do it, then I just don't think that it is a good idea going around and bragging about it to people. That, to me, is where the disrespect comes to play.JMO

I think you guys are over thinking things. Where I am from (central indiana) most of the high school coaches do not scout teams. They know of some of the better players from previous years but they don't have time to scout. Our coaches ask some parents and their players about any new kids coming up on the opposing team but I suspect that's as far as it goes. Yes the high school coach calls the pitches (as do travel) but they should allow their pitchers the luxury to shake of pitches. If they don't it just hurts them as a team. The pitcher and catcher can see things from their perspective that coaches from the dugouts can't. Your gonna put them out their in key positions so why not trust their judgement?

Fats, 1) the coaches would have to pay attention to catch the players doing this, 2) in the case you mentioned, you give the coaches credit that aint there, and 3) if you find a coach that is actually going and scouting any thing other than a play off game in another city, tell me what school and I will set my property and move in to that school district.

Donnie, calm down and don't call the realtor just yet. :D It was just a scenario. The only one that I could think of right now. It's late you know and my mind starts laying down on me about 9pm. But, you get the point. Maybe it didn't happen exactly that way and remember that we are not just talking about pitching. Maybe we are talking about covering the bunt or slap or anything that the coach could catch. I don't think that all HS coaches are stupid and that "one" needs to watch their step when it comes to changing their calls because they can make HS ball miserable for the DDs.

Ballguy--The key word in your post is "allow". If the coach knows and allows it then OK. If he don't, then what?

Hope yall had a great weekend

I definitely dont either. We just got a new one and she spent her first weekend after being named head coach attending a coaching seminar given by a number of big names, Candrea being one of them. That spells my most favorite words about a coach 'She/he cares' and this is someone who as she told me has played softball since she was 5.
