Travel vs School?

Because of the relentless comments made by the coach my DD says she would be happier just to play with her TB team and skip School ball (they are mostly 8th graders), but I know this will be a problem next year when her TB teammates are playing for their schools.

Have any of you been through this? What did you do, if anything?

If Killer is correct, your freshman DD will not get a sniff of Varsity either! Have a girl on our team that plays there, very good and only got a few innings last year! Would start anywhere else! Also, it will cost you over $900 to play there next year!!

I'm with SpazDad, if your going to commit to playing for the HS then it's completely fair for the coach to be critical of missing team activities (including conditioning). The rest is stuff you need to let go.

I can just about 100% guarntee that confronting the coach and telling her she's an idiot and she'd be nothing without travel ball players is not a productive way to introduce your freshman or 8th grade daughter to the HS team.

Biting your lip is a life skill that you and your daughter should aquire anyway. It might "feel" really good to give the coach a piece of your mind, but if it's of no benefit (and mostly likely will be to the detriment) why on earth would you do something that you know in advance would give you a negative result. Unless you can visualize the clouds parting and your toungue lashing producing an epiphany to the coach you already know the answer to your post.

In the same boat. DD's HS coach isn't as harsh about non-required off-season activities such as open hitting. He does restrict wearing any other team's logo during practice besides the school logo. His reason is that news media may show up at practices (and he's right about that) so he wants to present a team look. I'm OK with that regardless of his reasoning.

We have decided to just take it. As I've said in another thread, the HS coach starts his TB players because they're the best he has and he wants to win games. A freshman TB player started varsity 3rd base all last season, because she's the best 3rd baseman on the team. He may hate TB but he's no dummy either.

Apparently you edited out half of the initial post. Kinda hard to respond not knowing what the heck is the issue.

I will say though that I am incredibly surprised at the apparent lack of good school programs that Heybucket members seem to be saddled with.


Here in this town our varsity coach makes himself available almost year round. He has a hand in the local Fall travel team....and starts up with pitchers and catchers mid Oct as the Fall season comes to an end. Starts working with the rest of the team Dec. 1st. Not to mention his volunteering daily throughout the school year at the HS fitness center.

Several other schools in the area are in similar situations. Not all, but many.

But nowhere do I hear the bashing of HS coaches and teams like I do here on the Bucket.

I personally like our School and we have some good kids. I think our coach might be pretty good also, from what I hear!

I just do not understand why some coaches are so against TB when it helps them put a quality team on the field. I would understand if girls missed School ball, to be with their TB team, but during the School season they can't be with their TB teams at all. So what is the big deal if a girl misses a voluntary workout in the off-season to play with her TB team?

Last season it was very easy to figure out who played year round, and who had not picked up a ball in 9 months.

I did do a little editing because my DD told me to shut my pie hole! You know how it goes, the kids just want to play ball and us parents get them into trouble!!!
