High School Daughter loses interest due to HS Program

Nothing and I mean nothing better interfere with softball, and that includes travel ball which he hates with a passion and makes his feelings very clear to the team. DD got into a tussle with the HC for missing a game for a choir performance even though her JV coaches approved it. DD almost quit choir but the choir director raised a stink, and the principal of the school even told me "sometimes I have to reel (the softball coach) in." But I have to give DD credit for guts. The HC sent out an e-mail telling the players "don't bother signing up for a travel team" because he intends to start a summer team (no details provided). Some travel girls just e-mailed the coach and told him they had already signed up for a travel team (his e-mail went out in early September - obviously not aware of the travel ball calendar.) DD went to talk to him face-to-face. He ragged on travel teams and told her that if another player who chooses to play for his summer team is a better player at DD's position, then that player gets preference over DD. (What's the odds of that happening?) DD came away determined to show the coach how much she has improved from last year (and she has) and there was no way anyone was going to be better at her position. This HS coach has had some great success and just recently so there's not much to criticize except for the way he treats his players, not only the travel ball girls. None of the girls like him. The funny thing is he starts the travel ball girls because they are, naturally, the best players he's got.

I've been somewhat afraid that DD will say she's done with softball because of this guy, but she is not a quitter and is using this coach as a motivator to be a better player.

I've had some of the same experiences. DD was told by swim coach that she should choose JV Conference meet over Choir concert even though choir concert affected her grade an entire letter. AD was ambivalent at best no repercussion for the coach. End result my DD isn't in choir this year which I think is a shame, she won't say that conflict was the reason, but I'm fairly certain it was part of it.

The big problem with HS coaches coaching in the summer is that expectation that players should stay home even if it's a bad situation. From the HS coaches standpoint his statement about a girl playing better than your DD getting her spot should be true regardless of playing summer or not with the coach. For some schools it's a great tradition and the only option for the kids to keep playing (i.e. travel teams are too far away or kids aren't that level) so on the one hand I respect the coach working with kids in the summer (not getting paid btw) but they shouldn't put repurcussion on kids who choose not to other than the natural repercussion that if you don't play summer at all, you might fall behind your peers, and you might be giving a younger player an opportunity to shine in your position while your away. If you have a chance to play on a much better team and consistantly face better competition, that is likely your best option for personal improvement. Again from the coaches viewpoint, if your staying (especially as a pitcher) allows the HS squad to work together as a group against a higher level of competition, then it's definitely a benefit to the HS "team" for you to do so, whether it's a benefit to you as a "player" is a seperate question, especially if there are better opportunities to be seen by college coaches playing with a travel team.

We are so fortunate at our high school to have an amazing head coach. When he floats out to the third base box between innings, his long beard and white robs flowing in the wind, I swear (not literally) that I can hear angels singing as he gives our girls signals. Seriously, it is almost as if he instinctively knows what lurks in the hearts and minds of opposing coaches' and players' when he calls for a surprise bunt or calls a change up.

He, however, recently started leaving cryptic suggestions during their morning meetings that they should focus only on high school ball and should abandon their travel ball teams. I and other parents are resisting. One parent is even trying to get him fired. Hopefully, we are doing the right thing.

Is he working to get his players recruited by colleges? Most colleges recruit exclusively from select.

All he talks about is small, private, christian schools that play Div. III and something called the NAIA. He says our daughters can get a great education. But, he keeps discouraging our kids from signing with the big, public secular Div. I universities. It's just not right if you ask me. What do you think I should do?

Dont allow anybody coach or not to discourage your dd if her dream is playing big time D-1 ball. My dd was told she wasn't good enough to play with the big girls, she's not there yet but still working hard to get there. Not dissing the small schools but go for the dream if it happens great if not the small schools will always be there. JMHO

At some point you just have to accept HS ball for what it is. This is very hard to do. Last year we (dd, wife, myself) were misrable. The head coach was a moron. (lady coach) I kid you not when I say she read softball for dummies. From what I read on here most of our dd(s) play on high level select teams. 99% of the time that is where they get signed from. Take HS ball for what it is, a way to kill time until select season starts back. I have heard people on here say the coach is going to ruin my dd. No he/she won't. If your kid plays select ball they know how to play the game. Tell them to take the instruction from HS coach tell him/her I will work on it and just keep playing the game like they know how. Go back and read some of Donnies post. If I read correctly his dd played for a less than brilliant HS coach. That same kid plays D1 ball at a big school in Collage Station now. Have fun with it. Have a contest with your dd to see who can come up with the dumbest thing the coach did. For those of you who have a dd in the 10th, 11th, 12th grade you know HS ball is not going to change. For those of you who have kids that are freshmen just sit back a relax HS will be over before you know it.

I understand both viewpoints. But, I am aware of HS coaches who are able to manage both sides of the fence. They also are connected with or run year round travel teams. There are TB orgs here in Indiana who take only players from a certain school district and are deliberately a feeder org for a specific HS. If DD's HS coach had any vision he would have seen how the sport was going a long time ago, and either started or hooked up with a local TB organization to develop his players.

To add some more detail, this coach has tried to put summer teams together in the past and has been unsuccessful. I am not certain of the exact reasons besides he couldn't "get enough players" whether that means enough of his starters or just couldn't get enough to cover all the positions I don't know. If the players don't like him my guess is they don't want to spend any mroe time with this guy than they have to.

Which is another reason I respect the decision of some HS coaches to abstain from coaching their HS team in the summer. You would just never know who is there because they want to be there and who feels pressured to be there. Those kids are already locked into your HS for four years with no input on coaching, practice, competition etc.. If the HS coach wants to contribute, go coach an 8th grade team in your area that might be feeding kids to your HS in the future.

When a kid plays for a travel ball team they want to be there and play for that team and that coach. They may change their mind and change teams between seasons, but that is okay. you just don't have that freedom with HS ball.

Good point, our HS coaches put on a few clinics during the summer for the youth in the area. Which works out pretty well.
