I’ve been tempted to post on this board a few times, but had always managed
to restrain myself. I should have remained true to myself.
When MomTo3 posted her lament about what seemed to be the familiar
predetermined “open-tryout”, I felt some sympathy. Over-looking her strident tone,
and focusing only on the content, I tried to provide her
with some context. Sudden Impact was just travelling a well worn path.
I also felt that many of the retorts were not applicable, such as . . .
- “The try-out was well-run”: Of course it was; they usually are. That’s the
reason that some not-preselected players go anyway: for a good practice.
- “If your DD was a drop-dead stud player…”: These try-outs never say
don’t bother showing up if you’re not a total stud player. Most teams only have
2, maybe 3, such players. We’ve played many forgettable games this winter
against teams with 0 studs. Most travel players are decent, pretty good, etc.
If it’s a truly open try-out, why would a normal, good player not have a chance?
The reason is that if it’s not really an open-tryout, thenthe un-invited don’t get
as many AB’s, as much scrutinity on their pitches…
But then, posts started trickling in from parents who had not been pre-selected,
saying they got call-backs for the next try-out. Maybe this was that rare
open-tryout that actually was an open-tryout!
And then, the final kick-in-the-head: Mom-to-3/DD gets a call-back !!#@!%@#!
Did I misplace my reading glasses, and not see her mea culpa ?
Was her apology so subtly worded that I missed it ?
I feel so used. Will be awhile until I post again.
