Any suggestions on how to stop team hoppers

I am not a coach.

Once again if parents do their job and screen the coaches and teams before they commit they can eliminate alot of the reasons for leaving a team. Children do not leave a team. Parents make that decision so parents are the team hoppers not the children.

Yes I agree there are alot of coaches out there that can be a problem, but I say again if parents will do a good job of screening the coaches and teams before they commit they can eliminate alot of these issues.

I will say again parents are the main reason for team hoppers.

1) they overrate the talents of their dd
2) they do not screen the coaches and teams before commiting
3) there word is not their bond
4) they are blind to everything but there own perceptions

The problem, like all of our issues in this world, starts with Parents teaching Kids how to live life. Softball is a great Sport but the big picture here is that Softball teaches us how to live. It also teaches us how you were raised in this life. Parents should be teaching their kids to honor their commitments and understand that the rest of the team is depending on thier fullfillment of their role. Some days that role may be to Bat Last or to play a less desirable position. Teaching the Meaning of Team Player is a task that all people should go through, Softball or Football or Work or even Students. We all have roles in this life. You see, it takes a stronger person to go play Rt. field when they make a better 1st base, but the coach needs a rt fielder. Because that is what the team needed!! I work with some of these entitled people that think nobody has to clean the toilet! But you know, it's got to get cleaned. In the spirit of Christmas in our house we gather to find people that don't have so much and we each take from what we wanted and go give it away. At first the kids didn't understand when they were little. Now they don't ask they are telling us what they want to do for others. Not saying we are better, just telling what my family taught me to do. Those same kids when asked on a ball field to go play rt field jump and run to their position! They know somebody has to do it. Even if that little spoiled cry baby that would rather sit the bench than go to rt has been put in to play short. See they learn it at home and each of us has the oppertunity to teach them this life lesson!!!! It is so easy to say, "It will always be that way". Its so much harder to have a principle and live by it. My youngest signed up for an activity at school this year. It is an elective and can be dropped. She hates it! I asked her if she wanted to drop it and stop the pain of doing what she didn't like. She looked at me and said Dad, I signed up for it. I'm gonna finish it. She smiled and then said "Not signin up for next time!!!!!! I got good stuff from my parents and I thank them for that all the time. Merry Christmas to all at Hey Bucket!!!

You really should take off the hat. You have lost circulatuin to the Brain. Again. you are not helping the matter you have just shown the Hey Bucket community that you have issues.
1. Did someones overrated DD Hop in and take your kids position?
2. Did they expect more out of your B Ball coach because he promised the moon and couldn't deliver.
3. Did they break their word and leave because your team had whiners on it ( You and your Hat).
4. Did they see the sport from a reallity instead of the dream word you live in?

I used to laugh at how the Unions always say managment is the problem! and Management always says Unions are the problem. I don't laugh anymore because they both fail when they don't work to the same goal (GM). No one person is at the center of this Team Hopping problem!!! It is all that are involved, you Bucket heads!!! Stop the Blame game and get out there and work harder. You will see that if you put out the effort you are asked that you will be rewarded. Coaches, Players and Parents. Now go ask Santa for a Clue and get off this topic. Go see a shrink! It wasn't personal when that stud pitcher your team was riding left yall. You got your trophies off her and now you need to actually practice and get better. Thats Ball Baby. As you get through the years the crap settles to the B Ball and the good players rise to the Gold Teams. and then They go play in College. So If you find yourself not progressing don't blame others work harder. Or maybe this isn't the sport. You Know Swiming is an individual Sport. Nobody to blame but the Athlete!!! Maybe your DD needs to switch sports so you can resolve these anger issues. She jumps in and performs or not. No Rt Field, No Bottom of the line up. The clock tells the story!! Merry Christmas!!!! I know a lot of coaches and parents read the information on here good and bad. I would like to get some suggestions from the Hey Bucket community. What do you think we could do to stop what I call TEAM HOPPERS. I have had at least 2 different players come to my team in the last month who I found out through other coaches or even by admission of the parent that they have been on 6 to 10 different teams in 2009. As a coach you try to give them the benefit of the doubt but in the end you find out you are just another team in a long line. Sometimes the players are really good but the parents have no commitment or the player gets upset at something and the parent gives in to what ever the daughter wants. The player is never taught the value of commitment to their team mates. There should be some way for coaches to see a list of these players so that a coach knows what he is getting when he decides to offer a spot on the team. If a Team Hopper wants to play and go from team to team the unsuspecting coaches should know the players history. Thanks for all the responses in advance good and bad.

Larry, I don't mean to sound ugly, but you are one of the reasons this continues to happen. Through your intitial interview with said kids parents, you should have known that they have played for quite a few teams. Right then and there, regardless of how good the kid is, you should have told them that you didn't have room for them. Don't be part of their problem. I know hindsight is 20/20 and we have all been guilty of this once or twice. The only way and I mean the only way to keep people from team hopping is for the manager's to step up and not take kids that have parents like this. Especially the ones that do it in mid-season. If parents decide to move kids in between spring and fall or fall and spring, that is their choice but even those kinds of people could get weeded out if the manager of the next team does not allow them to play. Sure, eventually they will find a manager that will take them, but it may not be the best situation for them and that manager will find out when they leave his team.

Just my thoughts on this Larry and beleive me, I hate it when this happens. The parents have got to be more sincere in their commitment to the teams that they elect to play for.

I think I have away to begin to puts some accountability on the players, the parents and the coaches without making new rules in the softball associations. This coming year I am to do a beta test on my plan and I hope it will give players, coaches and parents a more informed decision about the team or player they are considering.

So maybe you can do your study and write a book. Once you master all the Softball issues You could be the ultimate Softball Dude, Host Tourney's and be the Key note to give the opening address to all teams and sell your book in the concession stand. This could become a full time job. Hell, buy a camera and take action Photo's as well. Before long you could have your own ball park and be the sole profiteer I feel like softball just got better!!
