12U Sudden Impact Tryouts - WHAT A JOKE!

by Momto3 » Sun Dec 20, 2009 7:13 pm

This is my email to one of the coaches regarding their tryouts this past Saturday. Anyone have the same experience?

We attended your tryouts on Saturday and could see that you were only interested in players who you have seen play, agressively scouted and/or were familar with. You were not at all concerned about players you didn't know. It was obvious when you and the other two coaches were not taking a lot of notes and no notes were taken during batting. You wasted everyone's time who you didn't already have an eye on. Why not just have those selected few show up? Why advertise on Heybucket EVERYDAY that all positions are opened and earned? That is all BS and the person who posted a response to your tryouts telling everyone to beware of the 12U Sudden Impact team was right!!! That person's words had a lot of truth to it. You had eight pitchers show up to tryout, having them throw at the beginning of the so called "tryout". Then, at the end of tryouts you spoke to the players and their families telling them that they did not get to see the pitchers and that you are also scouting pitchers through their pitching coaches. So why have pitchers attend and tryout? You wasted the time of MANY people who are very upset the way you handled tryouts. Word is out!

Dear Momto3 - what Sudden Impact did was not much different than what happens quite regularly at many of these so-called "tryouts". The coaches have already pre-selected & pre-arranged who has been invited to join the team - players that they're already familiar with.
They're usually also familiar with the parents - they don't want a good player who comes
with a high-maintenance parent.

I'm not sure why teams have these "try-outs" - it's simply some kind of tradition. There might be a good reason for it - I just don't know what it is. Many players & parents, who know the unwritten rules, just come out for the free work-out. As one Dad eloquently explained it to me, "it's a free, four hour workout, where I don't have to be the one yelling at her."

My DD has only been to one "try-out", and was pretty much pre-approved ahead of time.
She's been invited to others, i.e. invited to join a team & make a tryout appearance.
I've seen others come, like yourselves, and not really been given a chance.

I feel badly for the players & parents like yourself, who are not aware of the customs
of travel ball at this level. Best advice I can give is that you talk with parents from other teams
who have experience, and are willing to candidly share with you the realities of this sport/business.

Thanks FatsBDaddy, I appreciate your words.

We were also hounded for weeks up until a few days before making sure that we were going to be there for tryouts...Why so aggressive if you weren't even interested?? I chalk it up to a lesson learned...now we know.

As much as they advertise and as aggressive as they do it, that should have been a red flag. They are desperate and full of bluffs. Read between the lines. Oh well, live and learn. Was the workout at least decent? :|
Stay thirsty, my friends

They don't know us and we don't know them. Except for the moment as my DD signed in, there was no communication during the "tryout".

My DD also attended the try-out, and I thought it went well. In comparison to other try-outs we have attended, it was very organized with a lot of activity. I saw a couple of coaches taking notes. We received a call back today and think it is definitely worth going back, a lot of good girls showed up, hope we get to be a part of it....
