Is there an Un-written Rule

by Supersuds » Fri Dec 04, 2009 12:10 pm

I was at the Turkey Tourney in Chino Hills last weekend and seen more than one coach out there trying to recruite players. Just walk up introduce themselves and start talking to the parents while their DD's on the field playing for current team. Is this normal, I'm surprised we haven’t heard of things getting ugly because of this. Any past stories relating to this or is this just the way it is?

That is a bit bold

The parents usually do the recruiting at the tournaments, but never while the kid is in the field or at the plate :D

A little tacky but there is no "roster" in the fall... no championship play so players aren't protected like they are in the spring/summer. Once championship play is over for the year, signed players are released from their teams.

If he was a really good coach in a really good organization they the parents would approach him. But if your a really good coach and other coaches are approaching your player you shouldn't care cause you have a line of girls waiting to step in.

Well said Moe. I heard they were lurking at Alicia Park this weekend also. Yes a bit bold, tacky and somewhat scumbagish to be recruiting our kids while we are playing games. Nothing you can do. But is distracting. Good coaches no worries.

They also put the parents in a awkward spot, especially when they are talking and the other parents are sitting next to them listening whether they are interested or not..

Players aren't protected until they are red-lined on a Championship Roster at their first ASA Championship bracket game (usually ASA State's). Those so called "Player Agreements" used by ASA and signed by parents and players don't mean anything.

Just want to be clear that there are no "signed players". Players are locked to their teams only when a Championship Roster is signed by a JO Commissioner.

If he's tall, wide, always advertising for "tall 1st & 3rd basemen and pitchers who throw over 70 mph" and he has his wife with him, it's the norm. I wouldn't take it too seriously - it's more of a nuisance than anything else.

I've never witnessed anything that bold.

Classy.
