Hunting in Wyoming

Here is a bull elk my brother shot on Friday off of Casper Mountain outside of Casper Wyoming, where I grew up. It was a 453 yard shot. The bull scored 356 points. It was nice being home for a few days. Why the hell did I ever moved to Los Angeles.

He is supposed to send me some. If I get them, you are more then welcome to come over for some steaks . He better send them. It was a blast just being out there with him. But man I am out of shape!!!!! This photo gives you a view from the kill to the flat land down below were we started hikiing at 4AM. I still cant walk very well. My legs are sore.

How old would a bull like that be?

The Bull was about 6 years old. I've been told they peak at about 7 or 8 years old in horn size. I think Elk live to about 13 to 15 years.

453 yards, wow, thats over a quarter of a mile. I remember hunting in rugged country in arizona where when you see a legal buck, you have to first decide if you can make a good shot on it, and then second, if you do make the kill , will you die dragging it out of some god forsaken canyon.

Here in texas, we sit in blinds, deer come out to eat the feed we put on the ground, we shoot whichever deer we choose, then back up the pickup to the animal, load it up, drive it up to the house, hook it in the pulley, winch it up, you have it skinned and quartered in less time that it used to take in AZ to hike down to where the animal was killed. Its why now, I tend more to send my youngsters out to do the killing, I am content to hiking in, taking pictures, and my favorite of course, eating them. Its nice being on top of the food chain.

I wish I shot it. I didnt have a hunting license. Just went with my brother to enjoy the day. I was one of his spotters with the spotting scope. It was a blast. We had to hike back out, my brother stayed with his kill, and we brought up two four wheelers. Then we had to divide the elk in half and tied it to the 4 wheelers and drove back out. Took awhile do to having to find area around all the canyons.
