Swine flu prompts UIL to postpone all athletic & academic competitions
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas officials are postponing all high school athletic competition until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.
The move suspends the baseball season and eliminates the regional track championships, said University Interscholastic League Executive Director Charles Breithaupt. He said UIL officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.
The state golf and tennis championships are scheduled to begin May 11.
The state track meet, one of the largest high school track and field competitions in the country, remains scheduled for May 13-14. But it will require shuffling the schedule significantly.
All UIL academic competitions are postponed as well.

SUBJECT: Swine Flu
DATE: April 27, 2009
The Southern Section joins the Center for Disease Control and local health agencies in alerting our schools about the outbreak of Swine Flu.
Our concern is for the health and safety of our athletes and ensuring that the outbreak is contained. Coaches are urged to notify athletes that, at the first sign of flu-like symptoms, they consult a health professional and avoid contact with other athletes/students.
The Section office will work with leagues that, in the interest of safety, cancel contests because of outbreaks on teams.
We want all of our member schools to realize the best of athletic performance as we finish the Spring season of sport but urge caution in light of this health emergency.
The following advisory information can be found on the CDC website:
There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.
· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
· Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
· If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
The Southern Section hopes that reasonable precautions will help prevent the spread of this disease.

Interesting!!! IT SUCKS!!! At least for all of the 2nd year teams with multiple girls in the playoffs. It was going to be close regardless since all entries must in by May 8th but now that is out the door. 
Should be good opportunities for all of the first year teams.

This is serious, softball just won't be the same until this thing goes away if ever, especially in Texas, bring lots of hand sanitizer for the post game hand shake...

WOW! I know a lot of good teams that this will hurt. We will be short a few, but not like some others that will be missing half their team. This completely changes the landscape at HOF Q.

It is my understanding that the HS State Championships will be ending at the same time they were before the "Swine Flu" outbreak changed everything.
I was told they are just going to cram the 1st 3 rounds into about 10 days and then have the Finals in Austin... the 1st weekend in June. Just like pre-swine!
