Teams changing organizations...

by lucky » Thu Sep 03, 2009 8:45 am

So what's up with teams picking up and changing to new organizations? I see quite a few announcements that team "xyz" is now team "zyx", why do they do it?
If it's still the same coaches and most of the same girls, what changes other than the uniforms?

1. Field Access (this can be very important)
2. Dues / Buy-ins in the case of Minor's Gold revolt, I heard they raised to $500 for all divisions.
3. Perception on various levels.
-----1. Perception of name recognition
-----2. Perception of support from the different org.
-----3. Perception of better players and families because of better org.
-----4. Perception of a better season.

4. And my favorite, spite. A big "FU" to the dudes who failed you on #3 on your last move.
Coming to a team near you...

Or you can just go with the REALITY that certain organizations like the Batbusters, Corona Angels, Firecrackers, Cruisers, etc., have more to offer:

1. Better name recognition-college exposure
2. Better coaching-can you say Haning, Tyson, Rico, Seivers
3. Better players because of 1 and 2 above

I believe that the poster was talking about entire teams AND their coaching staffs.

We understand why the name brand teams get the good players.

Just a question though, I wonder how many of the name brand teams actually have players that have been on that same team since they were 10U or 12U? How many have "come up the ranks"? Also, the kids that do get picked up by the name brands have to come from somewhere. They didn't learn how to play the game all on their own. Somebody had to teach them and make them great players.

There are probably only a few players from the 10's and 12's that play for an organization's 18G team. But, the possibility of "moving up" through the ranks is enticing and many parents will flock to these younger teams in the hope that their DD will have an extra edge when it comes to 16U or 18G team selection. The younger teams get the benefit of this name recognition by having more players in terms of numbers, and better talent, to choose from.

what is the normal "buy-in" to be on a team...$500 sounds a bit high, don't you think?

I was asking about 10U and 12U teams changing organizations, not older teams...

I don't think it's a college exposure opportunity for these '99, '98, '97 girls, is it?

Only in the sense that parents believe their DD may have a better chance to move up and play on an 18G or 16U team within these "name" organizations in the future if they started with the organization in 10's or 12's.

Typical "Buy-In" $250-$300 plus Dues for fall and summer depending on number of tournaments and travel for coaches.

16U and Gold programs will cost much more than 10,12,14. They will usually have more players as well to share the burden.

You are right $500 buy in is a lot of money but what ATD did not mention is that the $500 buy in covers all of fall. Their are no dues do after that initial buy in. Besides that how many teams out there had the team pay for the players and one parents plane tickets to nationals. MG also paid for 13 girls to stay 10 days at nationals and the team paid for their families hotel rooms. Hardly a revolt by the way, one team left big deal.
