High School Ball

by Southerncali » Sun Jan 15, 2012 6:23 pm

I have looked everywhere on this forum. If my daughter is starting to play High School can she continue to practice with her Travel team? Or will her High School be penalized? I have heard it from her coach saying no she can't practice and her travel coach saying yes she can practice but not play any games or friendlies.

Thanks Spazsdad

I couldn't find anything in CIF rules that forbid it.

What ever happened to the good old days of one season ending before high school begins. Now HS coaches have their teams practicing and playing during the month of Jan and beggining of Feb
while DD travel team is playing every weekend. Told the coach that we are commited every saturday in Jan and Feb so DD's play time will now be limited. HS team is not getting her to college so the choice is easy, just frustrating. Coach is an ego maniac with no real knowledge to back it up. However, the more knowledge he gets the more tyrannicl he becomes. Season hasn't even started and the mind games begin......gotta love HS Ball!

If you are in San Diego you cannot have any contact with your travel team.

Hi Spaz,

I was curious as to why the rules are different for "San Diego" on contact with Travel Teams as opposed to the rest of So Cal? Just curious being that my DD is from SD and plays for an OC Team. I'm still a rookie on HS Softball logistics. :)

In a word, Tom Dodd. He is a crazy TB coach that would have marathon midweek and weekend practices during HS season and the coaches complained that their players were being run into the ground. So they made a no contact rule for SD.
It doesn't matter if your DD plays for an OC team, if she attends school in SD she is not allowed to practice with her TB team.
Interstingly the rule is not the same for all sports. Soccer parents sued over it and won but it was only for their sport. No parents in TB have taking on the challenge to try and overturn it.

Not that many parents have an issue with the rule, even though there are a few TB coaches that have pushed to have it changed. Most of the ADs like it the way it is.

The out of season rule is another that is not likely to change, which I think is great after seeing how far past ridiculous some HS coaches in the Southern Section have gone.

The girls play enough. The rule is a good thing.

My kid's HS AD told me that the ADs favored keeping the rule because it allowed the kids to play multiple sports in HS.

Any chance you have a link to this as documented by CIF? DD HS Coach has told her that she cannot play for TB team beginning in February (not a San Diego HS), but TB team is scheduled to play on Valentine's Day weekend.

I'm pretty sure Spaz said that non-San Diego HS players can practice with their teams but cannot play games.

In other words your coach is right, she cannot play in a Valentines Day TB tourney.

Feel free to correct me if I am misinterpreting. We're in San Diego so ours is more cut and dry...thankfully.

my understanding is that the rule only applies to the season of play which for high school softball is feb. 24 and anything before that they are considered club teams
