What is the technical difference between "club HS teams" and "reg season HS teams" Something does not pass the smell test. I wonder if CIF would consider them club teams?

Notice it does not say "club HS team" just "club team". A club team is no different than a TB team and as stated since it is before 2/24 CIF rules do not apply to the participants nor coaches.
I seriously doubt that all 14 teams playing this weekend would have done so if there was any chance of it causing trouble.

So as a "club team", they are not using the high school's resources like the HS paid coaches, HS insurance, HS uniforms and equipment, ect? Are they are independent club teams like the ones that play during the travel ball season? Does not sound like it. Does anyone have literature from CIF that would support such a tournament where so much of the high school's resources are being used?

HS uniforms, paid coaches, insurance, etc, etc, etc... During the Winter season, these High School Teams play eachother in "unofficial" games - this tournament is no different. Why do you take such issue with the "club" terminology being used to help clarify that because the "official" High School CIF season has not begun, they are allowed to play on a Sunday? What's the big deal?

I'm glad I can help :D
This is my second go around with high school softball. It seems like the rules about when a team can start the season have been thrown out the window. Just trying to get clarification.

They were thrown out the window a few years back when CIF changed their stance and allowed out of season contact between coaches and players. Now you basically have some coaches practicing as soon as school starts in the fall, playing games all fall and into January, and even tournaments, all before the date that CIF officially recognizes as the start of softball season.

In my opinion, CIF made a bad call on the change.

There are some interesting arguments for and against HS teams playing together outside of the "HS season"...as well as some intriguing questions.

(a) If the team is affiliated with the High School then who pays for the tournaments, coaches, uniforms, etc?

(b) If the team is not affiliated with the High School then who are these teams affiliated with for insurance purposes?

If it is the former then I believe the High School needs to be on the hook for all costs involved...if not, I believe this may be a violation of the California State Constitution...

If the latter then I believe the High School would still be on the hook in the case of an injury or other legal matter. With high school coaches, high school players, high school equipment, etc. I would imagine that if pushed into a court setting it could be construed as if it walks like a duck and looks like a duck its probably a duck.

Lots of "ifs" I know, but like I said it raises a lot of interesting questions.

Back to the actual games. Was there a championship game played or was it called?

No Championship game was played. I believe it was agreed that because Pacifica went undefeated they won the tournament.

I don't know the answers to all these concerns, but I know the girls had to have official athletic clearance, only uniforms were issued by the school, no bat bags or official athletic equipment was issued. Not sure how the coaches are paid during the winter season - but both Varsity and JV are playing games. No school-supplied buses are used and the players paid a fee to cover the umpire fees and balls.

My opinion is that the only issue was playing on Sunday. That is why the emphasis was "club". There was never an issue about the uniforms, insurance, etc. It was high school teams playing on Sunday and their way around it was using the CIF rule of the season start date of 2/24. It was a good tournament, good food, good weather and a great opportunity to see a few teams that most teams/school don't normally get to see.
