Showcase question?

What's on your mind?

by Capt Lew » Thu Nov 21, 2013 12:05 pm

My daughters best friend plays for a big travel program down south and has been talking to a Big 10 college. At the D9 showcase they came to watch her play but her coach only played her 2 innings between the 2 games they were at. She is a power hitter who always bats but doesn't get much field time. Does a t.b coach , knowing they were watching her, need to get her more field time? How would you handle this as a parent (they were pissed) how as a t.b coach.

Thanks, that was what I told her parents. I also was shocked that they didn't have a team rep to talk to college coaches. Is it different when the showcase plays single elimination brackets on Sundays, some of our smaller showcases do this?

I have seen successful travelball coaches make one exception to Spazdads' recommendations.

In this case the power hitter was a great hitter but a very poor fielder. Because of mobility only place she worked was at first base, and her glove was pretty bad. IMHO she it would have hurt the rest of the team at first base.

Parents of course did not see it the same as the coach, and pretty much everyone else. Their anger focused on not agreeing that their kid struggled in the field and believing that it was the TB coaches responsibility to make their kid an adequate fielder.

Of course when the power hitter got her deal together everything changed. The 180 the family took towards the coach strained everyone's necks. I suspect another 6-8 weeks and that family would have bailed. I also suspect that if that kid had played the field that day, not only would she had not gotten her deal together, other teammates chances would have been hurt in the process.

There are tons of examples of TB coaches just being idiots and not giving kids deserved/earned chances. But kind of hard to say exactly the right move without having been there.

If they want to show off the bat and it was free substitution let her hit every other inning or every inning if their is a school there to see her.

Watched a similar thing last year in Colorado. College recruiters would ask to see players and coaches would not show them.
So if they did it in the fall,,,leave, it will get worse in summer.
The TEAM agenda,,,success is coming in top 10, not getting a couple of girls signed and coming in 20th.
They play to win in some of these 50/50 showcase tourneys, just for ranking purposes.
If they are ranked well,,,they will tell you "we can get girls signed from the bench","more colleges will come"
These are the same coaches that do not care what school your dd wants to go to,,it must be a DI or nothing else. After all their ego reputation is on the line.

PS Winnings is great,,,it IS the game...Getting girls to college,,truly greater.
Your team is only as good as its weakest player. or payer,.
I see further, because I stand on the shoulders of giants
