Need Help.....Bunting

What's on your mind?

by Fasterpitch » Wed Sep 17, 2008 10:13 am

The girls are having a hard time bunting on a consistent basis. I am looking for a few new drills and / or game situation drills to introduce. Any advise would be great.

Thanks

Put dollar bills 10' around home plate, if their bunted ball lands on the bill they get to keep it, make it 20's they will work harder. I have never done this but I saw some rec coach do it.

Chalk a semi-circle between the baselines about 6-7 ft in front of home plate. Have your team line up...each batter gets one pitch from the machine....a bunt inside the semi-circle = you don't run....a fair bunt outside the semi-circle = you run to 1B, a missed bunt or foul bunt = you run to the HR fence.

Have them go through the line 6-10 times. They will magically start to concentrate more on their bunting and they will improve in games.

We have the girls draw semi-circles out from home plate and assign point values of 1,2,3 & 4 to the semi-circles....the 4 pointer is 1/2 way between home and 1st base....each girl bunts twice and gets 5 pitches each time....high cumulative score wins (last week we bunted for smarties candies)....competition and candy make them pay attention.....this is 12U.

Uhh....you might want to look at what I wrote...it helps improve the girls' fitness...giving them smarties makes them fat and will cause them to lose their teeth....

Well if you give them enough smarties to make them fat, then they probably aren't going to bunt anymore anyway... which is another way of solving the problem, I guess.
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

Tell them to stop pointing the bat towards the sky, dont hold it level, just keep the bat head slightly higher then the size of a softball. A bat head to high will make your kid chase a low and away pitch with too much bat head movement.
Have them show bunt, at the "top" of the strike zone, not in the middle. Any pitch above the bat, is now a ball, and should not be bunted. It also makes all bat movement downward, and on top of the ball.
Make sure all bunted balls are off the tip of the bat, to deaden it. Dont bunt off the sweet spot, or the runner you are trying to move over, will be thrown out at second.
Tilt the bat head slightly towards first base, and "recieve" the ball as it comes in. Avoid keeping the bat "behind" the plate and tapping at the pitched ball.
Have them tilt their heads and posture slightly towards the strike zone, an upright posture will not allow them to bunt a down and away pitch without fouling it off towards first.
Now reach in your pocket and get your checkbook out and gimme a hundred dollars you cheep sons a bitches!
I'm just sayin.
