High School Softball, to many games or not enough

What's on your mind?

by SnocatzDad » Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:23 pm

MN rules pretty similar to CT. Same season same # of games, same playoff structure. High School coaches can coach kids in the summer but only until end of July (with caveat if they are in Nationals in August they can keep working with them). From August 1st to Mid March no HS coaching (no coach led practice, no coached games)

So we have Captain's practices in the fall, Captain's practices and games Jan-March inside a dome. Coach can come watch the dome games, but can't coach the girls. We have several kids that play multiple HS sports and they get a pass on missing captain's practice if they do show up when they can. Average 2 days a week of Captain's activity from Aug-Mid March with time off around holidays. That is mostly to get kids work who don't work on their own or don't have year round summer teams to work with in the off season.

Sunday games are not allowed for HS sports. Are you sure on the dates?
Worst thing CIF did was taking away the no contact out of season rules. It opened the door for many over the top HS coaches to force the kids to play year round. No break, no other sports, and for what? Their ego? Many of those same coaches fare no better then the ones that keep to the traditional schedule.

That is what I thought but it isn't high school season so they can play..

I encourage the girls to play other HS sports yes even soccer ( I hate soccer too many injuries) anything to make their HS experience pleasant. If your DD enjoys HS then she will get up every morning and go to school eagerly. She will be successful academically and learn to respect teachers and coaches even if she doesn't like them.

I agree, there are many HS coaches that will penalize players for playing other sports other than softball. There are too many injuries in HS soccer though, to save money, the high schools utilize the 2 ref instead of the 3 ref system and many girls get taken out on cheap shots, mostly knees. I thought ACL was a soccer league.

DD's HS team will play 15 regular season league games plus County, Prep & State tournament games....Maximum number of games played will range from 22-25 depending on how deep the squad goes in each tournamnet.

"Optional" speed and agility training began last week for the girls not playing a Winter Sport. Captain's practices begin after the New Year, with the team doing a Spring training trip during Spring Break.

By rule here in NJ, official softball practice can't begin until the 1st Friday in March, with the 1st official games being played April 1. Early season games due get cancelled for cold weather or snow.

For most teams who do not advance far into the state playoffs, the season is done just prior to Memorial Day Weekend. State Tournament Final games are played the 1st weekend in June.

all 2nd year 14U and above club teams mainly go dark from March 1 thru mid-May. there may be an occasional Sunday practice or friendly but the girls are all playing/practicing 6 days/week for their school teams.

I spoke with the AD of my daughter's high school earlier today. Coincidentally, the San Diego Section is addressing this issue this week. Most of the ADs like the staus quo, but there is pressure from coaches to make changes and mirror the Southern Section.

I dont want to see high school start any sooner, but Im ok with allowing the kids to practice with their TB teams on Sunday.

In San Diego, the ADs have a lot say about these rules. I assume its the same in OC, so start there. IMO if you have TB coaches like Spaz offer support to the ADs, you will have a chance. You need parents to step as well. If you leave it to the TB coaches who are also coaching HS, you will lose.

IMO the argument needs to be framed as what is best for the student athletes.

After years of complaints about the quality of HS coaches, CIF-SS allows TB coaches to coach HS teams, and now a new set of complaints roll in. What a surprise.

To the OP, we play 24 or 25 games per season, plus a playoff game if we catch a few breaks along the way. Non-TB kids play in a fall ball league, but it's not a requirement. No mandatory off season workouts.

The new rule is they can play games all year.

How many games does your high school play throughout the year?

Since when can HS play year round in SoCal? Is that new this year?

Interested to know what schools are participating...
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.
