I timed our entire 14U team last year. I made them bunt a ball and run to first, clock starts when bat hits ball and stops when foot hits bag. IMO this timing method greatly reduces error. I made everyone (no lefties on team) try from both right side and left side
The range from right side was 3.0 to 4.5. Fastest three kids were 3.0, 3.1, 3.3 most others were centered around 3.7 to 3.8.
The range from the left side was 2.9 to 5.2. Only two kids got faster, most couldn't handle the change in footwork and actually got slower even though they were closer.
I like the drill because
#1 Any time you break out a stopwatch or any kind of measuring device, effort goes way up.
#2 Trained them to not waste time looking where their bunt went and just release and run.
#3 Practices how to shed your bat in this situation so that it doesn't hit the bunt or trip you
#4 Any time spent bunting in practice is time well spent.
