Keeping hydrated

What's on your mind?

by outfielder » Sun Jun 28, 2009 4:04 pm

My daughter is going to TCS and I hear last year many girls were dehydrated. I was told to have her start drinking plenty of water a week before and take one baby aspirin each day. Is this true and/or is there anything else to do?

I haven't heard the baby aspirin, but yes, you start hydrating before you are scheduled to leave.

I would suggest staying away from fried foods, too, and eating more fruits and vegetables.

Pedialyte works great during games, does not have all the sugar that powerade and others have. Has the electrolytes and all else though

Baby aspirin? Does your DD have a heart condition? Blocked arteries? Arthritis? I would use that old Indian remedy called "cold water" to hydrate the week before playing.
Ice cream?! When the f**k did we get ice cream?!

My son's baseball team just finished a weeklong tournament in Arizona and they handled the 105 degree heat pretty well.

- Pedialyte is expensive to use regularly and a lot of kids don't like the taste. Have a couple for the team in case someone really needs it.

- The low calorie Gatorade, G2, is an alternative to Pedialyte.

- Smartwater worked well for my son and others. It just has the electrolytes.

- Drink at least a 1/2 liter over the hour before getting on the field. My son started drinking a 700 ml bottle of Smartwater after breakfast until it was finished.

I was told by a doctor that hydrating the day of an event does very little for you. You must drink a lot of water prior to your games. If you play on Saturday you should start increasing your water consumption on Tuesday. Water also flushes good things out of your body so nutrition and vitamin supplements are also high recommended.

For Killer Rabbit,

Actually some studies have shown that aspirin can protect mice from heat stroke. However, these evidence are still being challenged in the scientific literature. :?:

That can be true I have never seen a team of mice over heat... :)

Seriously I have heard aspirin help with over heating, something like it thins the blood opens arteries or something like that.

Studies show that you should not give children aspirin anymore. Tylenol and Motrin are preferred. Use of aspirin in children increases the risk of Reyes's syndrome.

Use water and replace electrolyes as needed.

PS. "Damn it Jim! I'm just a medic" :D

#1,

I wonder about if a rise ball pitched by a mice truly rises :)

Actually, as well as changes in blood circulation, Aspirin would have an anti-inflammatory effect that reduces the response from heat-shock proteins. That hypothesis is being challenged since recent studies may show a different effect.
