USA Jr National Team-ASA

What's on your mind?

by Gary Haning » Wed Aug 08, 2012 1:00 pm

As many of you know ASA has dictated that ONLY athletes who competed at their NAtional Championships will be considered for the JO National Team. This is total baloney and is in direct contradiction the the USOC Section 9 bylaw.

We have contacted the USOC and a couple lawyers as well as Triple Crown Sports and USSSA and others will be contacted. As this impacts literally thousands of your daughters perhaps some of you would like to be heard.

I am sure you can get Mr. Ronnie Isham's email from the ASA/USA site, he is the ,ahh, gentleman responsible for this. You may also try Sara.Clark@usoc.org, she is a very nice lady who has tried to be helpful.

14 of the 16 athletes on the previous JO Team DID NOT play in Gold that year so the position thay have tried to take that they do not see other players does not fly.

This BTW is Section 9

Hi Gary,

There is a 3 stop process to go forth with a complaint for this:

1. Internal Grievance with USA Softball

2. Section 9 Complaint with the USOC

3. American Arbitration Association

Below are relevant provisions from the USOC Bylaws, Section 9.

Section 9.1 Opportunity to Participate. No member of the corporation may deny or

threaten to deny any amateur athlete the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games, the

Pan American Games, the Paralympic Games, a World Championship competition, or other such

protected competition as defined in Section 1.3 of these Bylaws nor may any member,

subsequent to such competition, censure, or otherwise penalize, (i) any such athlete who

participates in such competition, or (ii) any organization that the athlete represents. The

corporation shall, by all reasonable means, protect the opportunity of an amateur athlete to

participate if selected (or to attempt to qualify for selection to participate) as an athlete

representing the United States in any of the aforesaid competitions. In determining reasonable

means to protect an athlete’s opportunity to participate, the corporation shall consider its

responsibilities to the individual athlete(s) involved or affected, to its mission, and to its

membership.

"protected competition" means:

1) any amateur athletic competition between any athlete or athletes officially

designated by the appropriate NGB or PSO as representing the United

States, either individually or as part of a team, and any athlete or athletes

representing any foreign country where (i) the terms of such competition

require that the entrants be teams or individuals representing their

respective nations and (ii) the athlete or group of athletes representing the

United States are organized and sponsored by the appropriate NGB or

PSO in accordance with a defined selection or tryout procedure that is

open to all and publicly announced in advance, except for domestic

amateur athletic competition, which, by its terms, requires that entrants be

expressly restricted to members of a specific class of amateur athletes such

as those referred to in Section 220526(a) of the Act; and

2) any domestic amateur athletic competition or event organized and

conducted by an NGB or PSO in its selection procedure and publicly

announced in advance as a competition or event directly qualifying each

successful competitor as an athlete representing the United States in a

protected competition as defined in 1) above.

Why are you making such a big deal of this.....it's choice, it was announced that this was the way the team would be selected , so get a team together and abide by the rules. No one says your team can't get in.....I think you coaches make more of it then the players. Whats so bad in playing there. Rules all over the place, you have rules getting in your tournament set, being picked as an all star you have to follow rules....your making it more difficult then it is and letting many gifted girls miss out.

No one is saying if you play here you can't play there....teams still can play in your tournament too. Your 18U is on a different weekend and I'm sure you can find other weekends so teams can do both....is that wrong? Don't we want players to have the best of both worlds, make it work.

It's a big deal because the girls were not given a choice. All the girls going into college this year that did not have the time to get on an ASA team will not have another chance to ever make the junior team ever again. ASA was only thinking about themselves and who they could hurt for playing PGF over the girls.

Maybe had they said begining in 2013, this would have been ok.

So if I read the form correctly- you need to be one of the players/parents that feel that they were "wronged"- Is there any procedure for those not personally effected, but feel it wrong decision to let their feelings be know to the proper authorities?

LVTHEGAME - you really have no idea who this affects as you are bringing up being picked as an all star?? This announcement does actually say that you will not be able to play for or even be considered for the Jr National Team. The timing of their announcement eliminated players and teams from all the other organizations (USSSA, TCS, USFA, PGF, etc) to be eligible for selection. This is suppose to be the USA Jr. National Team, not the ASA Jr National Team. They did not make this announcement until two weeks prior to the Gold Nationals. Teams and players really never had the opportunity to make a choice. This announcement also eliminated all those players who play ASA or who are already registered ASA but did not make it to Gold Nationals.

Bottom line is even if they announced it back in May giving teams the option to make a choice, it is still against the By-Laws provided by the USOC.

It is a big deal I think and the timing of a few weeks before nationals was embarrassing for ASA to do something like that. Yes we all have many choices in life that is true. Playing for the national team shouldn't have anything to do with what team you are playing on in high school. If you are good enough to compete at world level playing ASA, PGF or Little League should not matter. ASA did it for one reason and one reason only and everyone knows that. When majority of the best teams nation wide went to PGF ASA had to do something desperate to try to gain some ground. ASA has been the main Show for many years now that they aren't they pull this. Bottom line who does this effect? Triple Crown owners, nope. The PGF board, nope. Once again the girls are the ones getting the shaft because a bunch of adults decide to pound their chest.
I have nothing against ASA until now. I love the tourneys and I have been to many nationals and loved everyone of them. But after this cowardly move I will support them no more until they remove that stupid rule.

I don't think ASA understands just how much this may (and probably will) backfire on them.

This kind of autocratic mentality is what led to the forming of PGF to begin with.

If someone says "boycott" then my response is "We're all in."

ASA used to equal monopoly. No more...

Is this the only reason ASA has given for making this rule change?
