NCAA To Take Stand on "Verbals"

Looks like the NCAA has had enough of the "verbal" BS and are now going to squash it.

Again, another situation where people took perception to the point of reality and will now suffer a standard, knee-jerk reaction by the NCAA.

I wouldn't doubt if many are not already trying to figure out a way around any restriction.

The problem that many are not going to understand is that many are going to try and force or "interpret" conversations as commitments and the NCAA can only do so much to the school or staff before they turn toward the player to stem an issue they believe is a problem.

We already experience the consternation caused by the misunderstanding of something which isn't official and has no real ramification. Now, you misunderstand or mistinterpret something and there may be some real life decisions by the NCAA the could very well affect the player and ability to attend the school they prefer.

Not saying such things WILL happen, but when a process is place in a rules, procedural or by-law publication, it is often less-simplistic than it was prior to mandate.

I don't think MTR works for the NCAA, we just may wish he did.

His point is that based on past experience, once the NCAA institutes new rules to protect student/athletes from overly-agressive recruiting, it won't be the schools who'll be affected (They'll figure out ways around the rules). It will be the kids that willl get caught up in the mess.

It is amazing to see people clamor for the restriction of their liberty.

Overall, I think the later the commitment, the better. Legislating that, however, will be difficult.

I dont see this as restricting anyone's liberty. Any kid that warrants a verbal prior to their jr year will still warrant it. They lose nothing, and more than likely will see their options increase, just like football recruits.

IMO this protects the kid who would otherwise verbal early from being dialed into one team that doesnt have to honor the commitment if something better comes along. Adopting the same policy that exists for football would be a good thing all the way around,
