It's time again for the annual "Stella Awards"! For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico where she purchased the coffee. You remember..... she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that - right?

That's right, these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that make you scratch your head. So keep your head scratcher handy.

it goes back further than that, 2002 is the eareliest posting I could find for that same article.

Lol. Let's just say that it's been a long time since I've been interested in the sub-compact market...

I seriously doubt that I could even squeeze behind the wheel of a Sentra, let alone drive it. Not that I would want to. I do encourage everyone else to buy those gas-sipping death traps though...just cheaper fuel and less danger for me.

Lol. Let's just say that it's been a long time since I've been interested in the sub-compact market...

Recently ... I asked a close friend for advice on what vehicle I should buy ... although he knew I was quite large he highly recommended the Sentra even though he himself admitted that he would not himself drive one stating they were 'gas-sipping' and admitting it would be less danger for him ... bwaaahhaaaahhhhaahhaaaaaaahaaaaaaa !

I'm on the fence on this issue too as I see valid reasons for both sides. However, with that said, I agree that more pitchers need to be taught how to defend themselves. When my dd started pitching, her dad did the same thing, took her out and started hitting tennis balls back at her and made her learn to react. Is she going to be able to stop every ball? No and of course there's always the risk of being hit for whatever reason. My heart aches for these parents because I can't imagine the anguish of losing a child. And who's to say they didn't go through defensive drills with him? But there's always the chance of an accident, and this was a very tragic accident. But I have also seen the pitcher that I cringe every time she makes a pitch because she's off balance, standing up there with her glove down, etc and it just makes her a sitting duck. I always want to go shake her parents and say, ARE YOU CRAZY?? Either teach her some defensive drills or get her off the mound!!

How about we unjuice the bats and teach your kids how to hit? Would you say the same thing to Frankie Rodriguez's parents? Oh, that's right, Frankie will never see a ball hit off of a juiced bat. Why only girls?

The bats are juiced to make up for all of your little DD's inability to hit. You enjoy watching her artificially hit and you really don't give a $hit if a kid has to die if your little Susie gets her hits. That's special.

Teach your kid how to hit.

It is tragic that this family lost their child. That being said, softbal1 makes a very good point. When our dd started to learn to pitch, we worked and worked her defensive skills. If something comes back at he she instinctively stops it. Many of the pitchers at her age (14U) appear to have very good reflexes and good defensive skills. As parents, we have to know that we are taking a risk by having our child play a sport. We just prepare them as best we can, use whatever protection we can (mask?), and pray for the best. Unless the equipment was defective or the umpire allowed an illegal bat, there's no one to blame unless we look to the parents for not adequately protecting their child with available safety equipment or ensuring he had the skills to defend his position.

Wake up! We know our children have a risk of getting HURT.....NOT KILLED! They can take the bat standard down to 88mph, the speed of a wood bat, with a simple vote. Your DD can be a lot safer. Don't buy into this crap these parents of "hitters" are shoveling. They just don't want to teach their kid how to hit....it takes work.....now, they can just spend $300 on a juiced bat and all of a sudden their kid can hit.
