She really liked the Techzilla. Also thanks for letting me swing the nanotek...Man that bat is dirty!!! This was the first time I had met Mr. Anderson and I must say he is a very nice guy. And I for one am proud to be a part of Team Anderson.

My kid also moved down from a 32 to 31.

My DD uses a 31/21. We are looking to move her up to 32/22. She swung the 2010 Catalyst and handled it with no problem. We would like to get the TechZilla but wonder if it will feel similar. In previous posts there are girls moving down.

Experts?

My freshman DD uses a 31/21 orange Catalyst. We are looking to move her up to 32/22. She swung the 2010 Catalyst and handled it with no problem. We would like to get the TechZilla but wonder if it will feel similar. In previous posts there are girls moving down.

I haven't responded because I don't have enough information. However I would venture to say that she will handle the TechZilla just fine.

Here's what you do. Get at least both lengths, have her in her stance and have her take a cut at an imaginary ball armpits high and outside edge with the lighter of the two bats. make sure she is swing up and away. first the shorter bat, four of five swings. don't let her be lazy and make sure she is taking real cuts. From behind her, watch where the barrel is at contact. Then have her take a few cuts with the longer bat. If her bottom hand rises and the bat head drops, a shorter bat is the right stick. If the the bottom hand stays inline with the shoulders and the bat angle stays parallel with her shoulders get a longer bat. Keep rising in length until you see the change; then back up to the longest bat with which the she maintains her mechanics. I hope this helps.

tumblebug, what are your thoughts on the "lite" bats that are flooding the market? For over ten year we have always used -9 & -10 drop bats with no problems. With my DD graduating I'm working with the younger girls(10-12 yr olds) i'm seeing more and more -12 drop bats and the coaches seem to prefer them. Can't convince them otherwise, need some technical info on the debate on drop weight bats.

Hookem74 --

There are mathematical equations (Physics) that define how fast a ball will exit a bat, with the two primary variables being bat speed and bat weight (and some other variables about the mass (weight) at different parts of a bat).

As I recall, bat speed is twice as important as bat weight. Of course the easiest way to tell is to set up a pitching machine at the average pitch speed of your age group -- let's call it 40 mph at 10u, and swing the same bat at -12 and -10.

My gut tells me that the lighter weight will get the job done better for girls of average strength and weight... that the increased bat speed and control outweigh the benefits of a heavier bat.

My DD at 10U swung a 31/19. The next year she went up to 31/21. Sometimes she swings now a 31/22. Practicing off the tee and soft toss into the net, she swings a 33/24 to build strength. If she gets stronger and can control the weight and keep up her batspeed, like most Olympic softball players, she'll move to a -8. (32/24 or 33/25)

I'm still workin on it but I don't believe DunninLA is completely accurate. I am looking for some data I filed somewhere but I can tell you that in terms of distance one ounce heavier bat = about 4 ft and 1 mph = about 4 ft. I'm still looking for the velocity calculation and chart. I don't want to do it over . . .
