Born and raised a Republican......converted to the dark side (Democrat) when I became a parent and realized how lucky I was to have awesome opportunities that provided me with many wonderful things in this great country. Yes, I worked my ass off for them, but I was privileged to be able to attend excellent schools. I believe everyone deserves a chance to be successful and not just the rich.

As far as demeaning our military, I apologize if I offended anyone. I was only trying to make a point that if people put themselves in harms way, they do not DESERVE to be put in labor camps or killed. Your hatred of Al Gore has confused you, I believe.

You became a liberal (if in fact you weren't always one) while steeped in the interminable drivel they call an education at the so-called elite schools you list on your resume. You were unfortunately about 25 years too late for a real education at those institutions my moonbat friend...and it's showing in the nonsense that you are writing.

Please point to ANY similarly smart person who likewise "works their ass off," who is denied "a chance to be successful" in this country. Seriously, who, specifically, is being denied access to opportunity? Or is it your contention that even the stupid and lazy deserve "success" (however you define that)? Should they award Harvard degrees to people with IQ's of 70? Give high-paying jobs to persons who have done nothing to advance their competencies?

Fact is, liberals, including you, aren't interested one iota in equality of opportunity. That's a merit-based concept, which is anathema to the entire liberal world-view. No, they are interested in equality of outcomes, and righting the injustices done by the rich upon the downtrodden (the white upon the brown, the man upon the woman, the straight upon the gay, etc., etc., ad nauseum). And that's just the well-meaning liberals...the bad ones exploit those who believe such nonsense for the purpose of aggregating coercive political power.

Journalists from all political spectrums should be protected when they cover a story. If we let our citizens be put into labor camps, then how are we any better than what Kim is doing to his own people. The US, I believe, should protect its citizens from being harmed. Isn't that what we are doing in Afghanistan and Iraq? Are we not helping those who could not help themselves?

I truly believe that your hatred for our present political regime has skewed your judgement. It's almost as if anything they do will be wrong without analyzing its worth. I cannot fathom a world in which we persecute people just because of their ideological views. It makes us as bad as the N. Koreans.

I am the product of rural farmers. They thought education was essential to improving oneself. They indoctrinated all four of my siblings and me to believe Reagan was the next messiah. Sorry, but I formed my own views, and while they are vastly different from theirs and yours, I still think everyone has the right to a good education and medical care.

So let's see...on your view, the stupidest, most ill-advised citizen, including those who specifically ignore travel restrictions and/or warnings from our state department, should be able to, on their own initiative, force our country's hand in the geopolitical/diplomatic arena. Is that what you are saying? I sneak into an enemy country to take pictures and interview citizens, get arrested for it, and now my country, the most powerful nation-state in the history of the world, must reverse its diplomatic stance, throw out millenia of tried and tested geopolitical strategy, and come charging to my rescue? The late 60's-early 70's is when the elite universities in this country (and most others as well) rejected the Western canon and began teaching garbage like critical race theory, post-structuralism, and a variety of other doctrines centrally motivated by political/ideological agenda. That's what you got shoved down your throat...for about 10 years it sounds like. You formed your own views...riiiight.

A good education and medical care? Provided by the government? lol...okay. Show me one other thing that the government does well, and perhaps we will have a point at which to begin discussion. Otherwise, keep your f'ing hands off my money. I work hard for it, and you take way too much of it already.

It's interesting to me that someone (weekend4trvl, maybe?) mentioned a democracy is when the majority makes the decisions, because that's exactly our problem now....the tons of people in this country (legally and otherwise) that won't work for themselves, but instead expect everything they need and want to be handed to them, have finally outnumbered those that think people should earn their own way.

It's scary to think about, IMHO....the number of people doing the providing are outnumbered by the number of people being provided for...and for the record, I'm not referring to those who, for some reason, can't support themselves, but rather the ones who WON'T support themselves.

Of course, my SAT was only in the 1300's, and I only have a B.S., and am a dum hillbilly besides, so what do I know?

This country was never intended to be a democracy. It is a republic. Democracy is a PC term for mob rule. For example, two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. The lynchings in the south were democracy in action. The riots in Chicago in 1968 were democracy in action. This country was founded as a republic based on the rule of law. Democracy is the rule of the majority. When the majority discovers they can vote themselves benefits from the national treasury the republic is lost. I only hope it's not too late to turn it around.

By the way, you can''t have a right to something that someone else is required to pay for, otherwise you are placing them in a position of involuntary servitude.
