Pre-Game Warmups - Who Runs?

What's on your mind?

by Mystic93 » Wed Aug 12, 2009 1:43 pm

We've all seen all types of warm ups. Most are run by the coaches but some are run by the players. For example, the players are in charge of setting up the nets and tossing whiffles, soft toss, and bunts.

Anyone want to share their opinions as to why the players should run it?

Just trying to post something that is NOT looking for players to talk about...

Funsucker!....hahaha

Last year my 16's ran their own pre-game about 50% of the time. I didn't like it all that much as I thought it led to way too much joking and screwing around....JMHO.....I've also noticed that the worst whiffleball pitchers are your starting pitchers.... :o

Lot of time wasted waiting for a strike to be thrown!

This year my 12's will be ran 100% by the coaches.....

This past season, we coaches ran the pregame warmups, and then the girls ran the warm ups after the game breaks....as long as they didn't become squirrels and start screwing around, laughing obnoxiously, falling down laughing and staying down, etc.....so when we would see that, we would take it back until we thought they could handle it again..
If your girls can do it, they present themselves very well, but if they screw around, it doesn't look good...

another thing that looks good if the girls do it right is hitting the balls on the dugout side right before games...if they do it right...if not, and they screw around, it doesnt look good..
its a balance of the girls enjoying themselves and not going overboard i guess...
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

We developed a routine that started with light stretching and dynamic warmups and progressed through throwing. After the first few practices the girls ran this on their own and kids that showed up late did it on their own complete before catching up to the rest of the team. I would tell them when to start and they usually handled it from there.

This gives the coaches about 20 minutes to set up nets, discuss/make lineups, complain about getting old, search park for hot mom's etc... I think it reflects well on the girls to a potential college coach if they can be seen to be self motivated enough to go through a warm up with intensity without a coach baby sitting them. Coaches resposibilities in pre game were limited to front toss to batters/bunters and warming up pitchers. Usually I would have the catchers warm up the pitchers, but we played most of the year with 10 healthy and I lived in fear of losing another catcher to injury and didn't need that to happen in warm ups.

I've found the 2nd year 16's and the 18's can sometimes handle it but no way for the younger age groups. Wiffles is the biggest problem.

One of our pet projects for the Fall is to have the girls set up and run a good portion of our pregame warm ups. These girls are all 97's so we will have to keep the eagle eye on them. One of the exceptions will be wiffles, there is just no way that they can be expected to throw them to each other without it deteriorating into a circus. We are going to devote a significant amount of time at practice working on it. The idea is for 12 YO girls to start to take ownership in their team and to further instill some of the responsibilities that will come with playing at the older levels.

Now, are us coaches just going to hang out over with the moms while all this is going on? Probably not, we are still going to have to keep a tight leash I'm sure.
