Coaches must throughly explain all the ground rules to the parents and to the players on the team and to those trying out for the team. These should be in writing as a pass out to the parents and players. A copy of this is signed by the parent(s) and player and the coach files it with the other team paper work. This will deter any problems on the understanding of the rules and guidelines for the team.
I have done this and I have seen other coaches do it and it is very helpful.
In these times, I don't believe there is such a thing as a true commitment from a player to a team or a team to a player. If a player's "parent(s)" (because it usually isn't the player's choice) becomes unhappy they take their child somewhere else to play. Like wise if a player or parent(s) become disruptive to the functioning of the team the coach will ask them to leave.
I do believe in the (2) times a year tryouts. (1) at the start of spring and (1) at the start of fall. This allows parents and players to leave or come on a team without a big problem. This allows coaches to choose players to fit their program and to allow players to seek other avenues if they are not satisfied with the current teams program.
This should be about the players and what is best for them. Never should it be what is best for the parent(s).
