In the article, both pitchers had undergone surgery. Throughout Heybucket discussions, single-point evidence is offered regarding overuse injuries to fastpitch pitchers.
Any physical activity is going to result in some level of injury given sufficient numbers of participants. I would like to see a study that relates debilitating injuries in fastpitch pitchers as a result of pitching frequency to some significant number of pitchers in a survey. We can all come up with cases whose incidence frequency is comparable to those seen in so-called Darwin awards. We cannot reasonably draw general conclusions regarding a population on the basis of so few data points.
It is not my intent to minimize the pain and suffering experienced by fastpitch pitchers and their loved ones who have been injured as a result of overuse. I do think, however, that it is alarmist and unreasonable to suggest that all or even a majority of fastpitch pitchers are going to be seriously injured as a result of heavy use on the basis of a few cases.
