Question about 10U pitchers...

What's on your mind?

by MarnelKelis » Thu Jun 10, 2021 7:40 am

Which is a preferable starting pitcher/ace at this level?
[Player 1] Speed, a one-pitch repertoire (fastball) and a significant lack of control (5-10 wild pitches/inning), 6 walks/inning. 13 runs in 2 innings or
[Player 2] Great control, a 4-pitch repertoire (curve, curve change-up, change-up, fastball) great control. Not as fast. Batters make contact and poor fielding (infield grounders, pop flies to outfield) cause base runners and runs. Very few walks. 4 runs in 1 1/3 inning.

Thank you!

Control (Location) is always better than velocity at any age. You can't defend a walk, if they hit it then they hit it, teach your defense to field the ball.

It's also VERY unlikely a 10 year old has command of 4 pitches. If she's got great control, develop that changeup, it's the most effective 2nd pitch. Your priorities for pitchers should be Location, Spin, Velocity in that order.

Pitcher #2 should be #1
Nothing worse for the defense then seeing all those walks. Then when the ball is hit errors happened.

Pitcher# 2 if the coach knows how to call pitches, and if #1 isn't their daughter.

Hahahaha the most obvious answer, but what difference does it make?!?! I'm guessing they are going with P#1 because she either throws really hard, is the head coach or assistant coaches daughter, or they are trying to make a parent happy to keep the kid on the team...
