What's on your mind?

I guess it doesn't seem so bad without every other word being the "N" word or the "F" word.

But, it WAS just as bad, thats my point. Really think back, and remember the songs we listened too growing up. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. It's all the same. Because I let my Daughter choose her music, doesnt make me a bad parent. My Daughter plays Travel softball. She runs HS Cross Country. She plays HS softball. She is a str8 A student. She plays or practices 6 days a week. She works out, ON HER OWN, 4 days a week. And, thats just like alot of the Daughters that all of you have here on the Bucket. And, guess what, she likes the song "Soldier Boy". Just because you dont let your Daughter listen to certain songs around you, doesnt mean they dont listen to them. And, just because you are using censorship on your kids, doesnt mean they will grow up good. As a parent, just hope you have raised your Daughter to be strong enough, and smart enough not to let a SONG influence her decisions, cause I'll tell you this. IF a song can influence your kid to be bad, you are in for ALOT of trouble. Most everyone's kids on here are good kids. They play a great sport, and, dont have time to get in trouble. Be happy for that. So what if they like a song thats on the radio. Trust me, ITS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL.

1) Ummm...yes, that is precisely what it means. My kids call me from other peoples' homes to see if they can watch PG rated films. They respect the boundaries that I have set. And they don't like ghetto crap, because a) I have explained precisely why it is crap, and b) they were raised listening to higher quality music, and thus didn't develop a taste for sewage.

2) Protecting young kids from negative influences at a young age won't guarantee they will grow up good, no. But it will certainly improve the odds. Just the fact that you care enough to place such limits is a fact not lost on your kids.

3) It's not whether a single song can influence your kid to be bad. It's whether they are continually immersed in excrement, constantly exposed to questionable moral and cultural influences and value systems. And the fact that you are permissive with respect to that is similarly a fact not lost on your kids. "I am your dad, and I approve of these messages."

4) Equating the Eagles to Soldia Boy is absurd. It's "just as bad?" You have got to be joking. How about 2 Live Crew then? Is it just as bad as 2 Live Crew? You okay with your kid singing and dancing to "Me so Horny?"

But the fact is I monitor lyrics in all music, regardless of genre, and change the channel when inappropriate songs come on. Moreover, my daughter changes channels when songs with questionable content come on, because a) she doesn't like them--they make her uncomfortable--and b) she wants to protect her younger siblings. I'm not sure if I can take full credit for that, but I'll take it either way.

Thank you Thank you Thank you..... I may be the parent of the only 13 yo boy who won't say the word crap he will spell it. I have always believed in over seeing what my kids read, watch and listen to. I don't think of it as censorship but simple monitoring. When kids are exposed to foul language, violence and other questionable material at an early age they become desensitized to it. Thank god for Walmart and the censored CD's. Because its the music and not necessarily the lyrics they like.
Too bad, so sad, bye bye

I don't think you teach bigotry, you have never even hinted of it. I think it was more of a statement against bigotry in general. On my error, I think I just grouped you together with some of the other self-proclaimed "rednecks" on this site. After re-reading your post, it is obvious to me that you are not on that ignorant, joy ride to Hicksville.

Whether the term "ghetto" is racist or contains bigoted connotations was previously addressed on this site, albeit in a no longer existent thread. In short, it is not racist/bigoted. It refers to low class or debased value systems, which can be (and are) present in every ethnic group. Thus "ghetto pigs," when directed at a group of individuals of any ethnicity, has nothing to do with the ethnicity and everything to do with the character of the individuals identified.

Having participated on this board for over a year now, and having read hundreds upon hundreds of posts by both Spaz and Donnie, I can claim with a high degree of confidence that neither are racist. Culturally biased perhaps, but not racist. But there's not a damn thing wrong with cultural bias--at least when based on reasonable and objective criteria. Some cultures are superior to others, plain and simple.

DonnieS says,
"Exactly what I do when I am on the road or driving into the grocery store and a low-rider comes up with a ghetto pig in it, running rap crap at 120 db, I keep a Hank Williams and a Patsy Cline cd handy, I park next to the pig and crank up Patsy so loud that it will almost drown out the trash. In our town there are laws against the disturbing the peace but since this is predominatly one ethnic group here that violates it, the ordinance is never enforced."

I've read this post 100 times and it still doesn't sound any better. It doesn't take a genius to see the undertones of this statement. It would take a genius, to coin and introduce a phrase that justifies this belief. "Culturally biased"

There's an old school saying....and I'm old.
Looks like a duck, walks like a duck, acts like a duck, quacks like a duck.....is a duck.

I hope your right about Donnie and Spaz, for the sake of our culture. I'm glad you spoke up on their behalf.

"Some cultures are superior to others, plain and simple"
Throughout the history of the world, millions of innocent people have lost their lives and freedom because of this belief.

Another old school saying.....
The only thing i know for sure, is that I don't "for sure" know anything.

Universal Perspective and love for everyone.

I didn't see that particular post, and thus wasn't referencing it specifically. I'll let Donnie speak for himself re what was meant by the "one ethnic group" quip (which is actually a little ambiguous).

Thanks for your vote of confidence in my intellect (however tongue-in-cheek), but the fact is that some cultures ARE superior to others. Not as a matter of opinion. As a matter of objective fact--in that the practioners of superior culture enjoy higher standards of living, more freedom, better health, etc.

For instance, which is superior, a culture that enthusiastically embraces education or one that rejects it or pays it short shrift? One that values thrift and delayed gratification, or one that values instant gratification? One that advocates lethal violence as a viable solution to interpersonal conflict, or one that believes in the rule of law? One that sees grift and drug dealing and other criminal activity as viable life paths, or one that advocates hard work, discipline, and respect for one's fellow man? The answers to these questions are clear.

I've said it before, but I will reiterate it...the ability to discriminate between quality and everything else is one of the highest human functions. This applies to culture selection as well. Your rejection of this notion smacks strongly of cultural relativism...the idea that nobody can claim that their culture is superior to any other. But of course you paint yourself into a corner by taking that position. Because if Spaz and Donnie can't criticize elements of anyone else's culture, neither can you criticize theirs. On your view, "redneck" culture (your term, not mine) is necessarily just as valid as any other.

But the main point you seem to be missing is that most people, including me, don't give a rat's ass whether others want to debase themselves and live animalistic and/or unproductive lives. We just don't want to pay for it, and we don't want to be inundated with their inferior cultural values (or decibels). Live and let live? No problem. Let me and mine live unmolested too.

No doubt. I already liked Soulja Boy. Now that I've learned what "Superman That Ho" means,

You (not anyone in particular) want to know one of the very least used applications of human being's highest functions? The irony is incredible, nearly to the point of being unparalleled as far as I know. I'm referring to the knowledge/understanding of how humans think. If you spend the time to learn about it and apply what you've learned as objectively as you can to your own thinking, you will likely never again think the same way. And if everyone did it, the parenting and political discussions on HB would be completely different.

BTW, on an entirely different note, a few years ago I was talking with a child psychiatrist about youth sports. He would not allow his kids to participate in organized sports, in short because of all the BS adult behavior. Pretty funny.

I guess if you didn't read the original quote, you wouldn't understand why I decided to show up. The only clarification I got from DonnieS, was that I should call him "Mr. Redneck". I also don't remember criticizing the redneck culture, other than recognizing that that type of mentality, usually places you at the bottom of the scum barrel. Do you disagree?

The ability to discriminate between quality and everything else, is a learned behavior. If you are taught that a certain part of our culture, is of less quality, you will discriminate accordingly, wrong or right. I understand that you are culturally biased. I don't quite know exactly what culture you are describing in your rhetoric, but it seems like you are taking the best characteristics of several different cultures. I'm a proud American, but I'd be a fool to mistake the Utopia you described as our own. Let's see... the non-embracing of education, a culture of instant gratification, lethal violence as a viable solution to interpersonal conflict, dealing drugs as a viable life path. You've just described "our culture" to a tee. Was that your point?

Is our culture the happiest? Absolutely not. Are we the healthiest? Absolutely not. Are we the wealthiest? Absolutely not. Are we the most peaceful, or do we have the highest rate of murders anywhere on the planet? So why do we insist on thinking that we are the best, or even pretend that we know what the best is?

It gets dangerous, when people don't recognize other perspectives.

Having been all over the world, I now know differently. I have seen what we do good and I have seen what other cultures are doing better.

Would I live anywhere else? Probably not...well...maybe Amsterdam.

What America does do the best, is allow the freedom to talk about it all. God Bless HeyBucket.

I will no longer beat this horse. Your points are well taken and I like you. Also, like you, I really could give a rats ass.....

You know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in Amsterdam?
