Inappropriate Music

What's on your mind?

Any questions?

Now that WOULD look great on a poster no one would give a crap about.. similar to "This is your brain on drugs."

Slogans are always fun.

Useless.
But fun.

It's Ok to listen to music which demeans women during a "girls youth" softball game. A time when coaches, managers and parents "should" be instilling strong values of empowerment, morals, sportsmanship and Female equality. As we shouldn't control what they listen too.
With this exception not based on lyrical content, sexual undertones (around 10-17 year olds), grown men and women providing music which suggest sexual acts (Around 10-17 year olds), but because it might distract another team on the other fields 60 feet away. You people have absolutely friggin lost your minds. Lose the whole my cousin bit as well, bad parenting is bad parenting regardless of methods used whether it be the ship them off to private school or let them run free, because for every unwed mother who went to private school I can provide 1000 who had parents that let them do what they wanted, didn't care what they listened too and for most of them they have multiple children from multiple fathers (or atleast the ones who didn't "superman the ho") Good luck being a grandparent in your thirties

Music at games is rare. Very rare. Your daughters usually listen to the downloaded uncut "women are sluts" versions free from lime wire and have it on their ipods and they dont hear it at the fields.

Much more common is some absolutely attrocious behaving idiot coaches and parents teaching those wonderful values.

Before I'm going to allow potentially harmful influences into my kids' lives, there better be a corresponding benefit that outweighs the risk of harm. So again I ask, what is the benefit? There is none.

What I"m hearing from you is that if she likes it, she shouldn't be denied it. That might be true of completely harmless privileges, but this doesn't qualify. It is a little too coincidental that the ghetto values permeating our culture have been accompanied by soaring teen pregnancy, illiteracy, institutionalized poverty, wanton violence, intrepersonal and intergenerational disrespect, materialism, selfishness, etc., etc. That "music" is both a product of and a contributor to the downward spiral.

And if you think that mass messaging isn't effective, you're dreaming. It's highly effective, as anyone in the multi-billion dollar advertisement and entertainment businesses will tell you. These entertainers are selling a lifestyle--and a value system--through their personalities, personal exploits, and lyrics. They and the industry promoting them are vested in them being "cool," because that's how they sell their product.

So if the concept of Supermanning Hoes is something you are comfortable with your daughter grooving to and, more significantly, believing is mainstream, I feel sorry for you. And that's really what we are talking about...mainstreaming the worst elements of ghetto culture. The fact that you have no problem with it merely shows how successful that mainstreaming has been.

Proof ignorance is bliss....

And I say that as the father of an 18 y/o girl, not umpire or anything else.. normal guy...

I dont know if you are trying to just limit it to perhaps just oral activities instead of the full act with her bf's by the time shes 16 or so by the MISTAKEN belief you are in control of the music because the 28 mins shes sitting with you, she doesnt get to listen to it..

But your day of redemption will not be pretty I'm sure.

Skarp does make some very good points ... and I don't disagree with his style of parenting, in that, you teach them right from wrong ... but, you have to realize when it is time to back off ... and he may not have reached that summit yet ... time and experience opens our eyes ... Skarps DD is much younger than ours Wade ... in a few years he'll be armed with the knowledge that has been bestowed upon us old farts  ... A couple weeks ago I met this 45 yo woman at the gym, never been married, no kids ... she was teaching a 'Parenting Class' ... maybe she has a degree ... but she couldn't raise a turnip ....

I'm coming in late in this discussion but I have to add one thing to the points that Skarp made.
When posters like Nzane come on to point out that vulgar lyrics have been around for the last 40 years as some sort of reason to allow your children free access to crap is ridiculous.
Yes there have been controversial lyrics in music for many years but it does not automatically correlate that everyone was listening to that crap at age 12,13 14 years old.
There was certain music that was not allowed in my house and if my mom caught me listening to something she didn't like it was removed. And it was explained why.
There are, what I would call pornographic music like the Motley Crue, AC-DC examples given earlier, that serve no purpose except to be titillating. I never enjoyed that style of music and would not allow my kid to listen to it either.
But lyrics like I Shot the Sheriff tell a story.
It's like comparing Hustler magazine to National Geographic and saying that they are both literature, they have both been around since we were kids, so what's the big deal?
To me there is a difference and it's up to responsible parents to know the difference and educate our children as to what is trash and what is not.

Uh...say what? That you were speaking as the father your own kid goes without saying ( ), because you haven't the faintest clue about mine.

Anyway, I'm not saying that my daughter hasn't heard the stuff. And I'm not saying that i can control access, either inadvertent or purposeful, to everything at all times. But the fact that i have been very clear about my disapprobation of certain types of content has left my kids with a clear understanding of what their father condones and what he does not. I've drawn a bright line between right and wrong...and that line is a point of reference that they have even when I'm not around. If your kid was blowing the football team at age 16, maybe that has something to do with your failure to provide a similar reference point.

I'm just sayin'...

shorter translation:

She knows where the line is - she knows what happens if she crosses it.

There is actually a name for this logical fallacy: namely, "appeal to experience" (I'm right because I'm more experienced). Also apt would be "patronizing." Unfortunately "informative" doesn't make the list. In fact, nobody has yet made a cogent argument for why allowing your kids free access to this kind of music is a beneficial thing...or a smart parenting decision.

Obviously you slowly relax standards as your kids get older. You allow them access to formerly taboo content, discuss new topics with them, etc. But listening to songs explicitly about supermanning hoes will be forever off-limits as far as I am concerned. Why on earth wouldn't it be? The stuff is manifestly vile.

softballgrammy wrote:Skarp son, I like you. You're a good kid. How many times have I told you about hanging out with those two kissin' cousins DonnieS and Spazdad. I've told you time and time again. You know those two are up to no good. Driving around the backwoods in the General Lee, looking for ghetto pigs in low riders to blast country music at. What good is that? Are your daughters in the car when you do that? Have they gotten their ass whipped at school yet?

You see son, once you decide to hang with that crowd, you become one of them. Whether you know it or not? It's just that some of your words were starting to sound a little .....redneckish.

So get out of that car son, you're better than that. It's too late for some people. You sound like a good parent, but be careful from which perspective you teach. While you may be teaching abstinence, discipline, and hard work, you don't want to even get close to teaching bigotry. That will put you and your loved ones at the bottom of the barrel of scum. You seem smarter than that.

The good part, is that sometimes kids rebel against what their parents teach them. The result, cute interacial babies. :o

Well granny, I like you too. There always seems to be a shortage of grist for the mill around here, and I get the feeling that you're gonna do quite nicely.

But for now I'll play along, all nice and friendly like. Please do be so kind as to point out where I have been "close to teaching bigotry." I surely wouldn't want to do that. My own cute interracial babies might get a tad confused.
