Illegal bats thrown out during CIF finals

What's on your mind?

Being a baseball guy trust me. Wood is outrageously expensive.

Top composite bat +/- $350. Compare to good wood $100 per. If player swings as much as 500 times a day. Can easily use 4-6 bats a year. More if you can't find good wood.

Woods bats would change the game - that's a whole lot of extra weight (approx -2, I think). Slappers would have a heck of a time handling that heavy of a bat.

Exactly what is all this armor you speak of? Outside of some kids wearing a mask it's the batters that are more geared up than pitchers.

Masks, shielded chest undergarments, knee pads, shin pads, mouth guards....pretty soon we won't be able to tell the difference between catchers, hitters, and pitchers.

The associations will certainly wait until some young lady is tragically killed before doing anything.

Well, I haven't been to any games yet, since youngest DD just finished her college playing days, for good

I do have a couple of nieces that are playing wreck ball in Irvine and see the game day pics that nephew shares on Shutterfly. Looks like at least pitcher and corners are all wearing masks (not sure about the middle IFs). By the time they are playing older TB, defensive masks will be the norm ... at least not as frowned upon.

I remember when my DDs were in wreck ball. Only kid wearing a mask on her batting helmet was a dentist's daughter. He put too many teeth back in, when he could, I guess.

Anyway, I agree that armoring up is a definite trend. Wonder what Nuveman thinks about it
I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words.

The game has changed,
They didn't wear helmets in early football...or in hockey...or pitchers in mens SP
or seat belts...Things that just make sense...Did wearing helmets ruin those sports?

When I was a kid, I spent many a mile on ledge in back window of Grandpas Oldsmobiles...(always bought Olds 88's and 98's....with the steel dash and huge knobs...but we dont do that now...ever seen pics of those huge metal knobs stuck in peoples noggins?
NOBODY wants dead bats and softer 'safety' balls...even NCAA baseball livened things back up some...
Besides the 'tough enuff' cynicism and 'back in the day' nostalgia...

Had a man say one time they'd use masks as a 'crutch'.,,,huh?
ONLY place my kid is scared to get hit is in the face when she plays 3rd...a mask takes care of that...try to get it past her wearing one,,Plus, besides the pain, cost of injury, or worse...to the player...How much $$$$$$$ does a College coach have invested in a stud pitcher?
Did you notice that batters for FL all wear masks on their helmets? the back to back National Champs ...Why?
Walton has a LOT riding on them being healthy and have teeth, eye sockets etc...few strands of wire and some pads? And that ruins the game????? I call BS

Why NOT wear masks?

I wore a helmet many years...first one was steel with a fiberglass inner helmet...then a Kevlar helmet...neither were bullet proof BTW...I didnt plan on getting hit by shrapnel or anything...didn't MOF...but I wore it 'just in case"...and for the record, with the steel plates, which are heavy as hell...the vests the military wears are NOT bullet proof....wonder how many lives that protective gear has saved?

Football helmets and padding were changed due to the players getting better, faster, and stronger. The game of softball has changed because the bat manufacturers are responding to "hitters" parents. We really don't know who the real hitters are because the bats make hitters out of all of them. This, in turn, makes the game very dangerous for the pitchers. We are already seeing a trend of parents who are steering their kids away from pitching......because of parents who want to see their DD, Little Susie Sucks, hit a homer. I guess we could go to a machine pitch solution....like they do after tee ball.

I would like to see a tournament held with nothing but wood bats (and no corks) just for fun. Has that ever happened and is it even possible?

Sam, I promise you...girls today are faster and stronger...per team vs. just an individual...
Technology besides composite bats has helped a lot...
They game has progressed...and will only more so

Despite your fervor about something as simple as a mask vs. facial reconstruction...You do as you feel.
You probably wanna do away with remote controls for TVs also... 8-) ...
I'll pass on the wood bat thing...besides being outrageously expensive, you'll still have girls pitching who cant field those balls hit with a wood bat...
