Had a Stacey Nuveman injury last weekend at UTEP

In four games I have seen three girls hit in the face at bat. Two by pitches and one by foul ball. All had face masks. All would have been seriously hurt without then. IMO


Btw. Have only seen two pitchers with masks( no fielders)

The foul ball was a pitch off the handle that fooled the batter. One of hit batsmen was a slapper leanining in that had a fastball hit her so hard in the mask it turned her helmet around(yes it was on tight). I was just reporting what I saw(it reminded me of the original post)

I Agree with Spazsdad, that is a lot of mask action to observe. Not sure why you think his response is bizarre. His response merely indicates he thinks you are bit "The sky is falling!" on this subject.

I have watched about 40 games this year and seen exactly zero foul tips go off a mask. I suspect any batter taking a ball of the face mask, is most often doing so because they are aware the ball will hit their mask.

The carnage that you project, it is not happening in the games I go to. Most level headed people see that.

I have not seen a foul tip go into someone's face since rec league days. I have seen one wild pitch this year hit a kid in the face. That hit the one kid I saw without a mask.

Well you know how this goes. You protest, protest, protest until you witness "the carnage" first hand to your DD's face or someone else close to you or her. Then you realize in hindsight you probably should have encouraged its use.

I had this exact conversation with my DD a couple days ago while we were watching a college game in person and one of the batters was not using a mask. I told her I strongly suggest that she continue to use the mask and that I would like to see her use one while she pitches and plays third as well.

I believe it should be an individual's choice in these cases, but heaven forbid it happens to my kid or yours.

The one thing I do find particularly disappointing about some of the arguments against using a mask is this borderline elitist attitude where some seem to be saying that this couldn't happen to their DD or any player that knows what they're doing.

Yes really. I have been watching the game a long time. The pitches that are hitting batters in the upper head area are high and inside. Usually it is the result of the batter mis-reading a pitch. It is either more inside or higher than originally thought, or it has more movement than the batter read.

Same with one fouled into the shin or foot, except those are usually low and inside.

Batters with masks chase the up pitch way longer. Batters without mask give up on those pitches as they know what can happen.

Same thing you see with football helmets and pads. The better the helmets and pads become, the harder the hits. Injury rates have remained extremely flat over the last 100+ years of football.

Same with hockey. The game has changed significantly adding lots of padding, but the speed of the game and speed of the puck and technology to hit the puck have equally stepped up to offset any reductions that masks and pads brought.
