Nope, its not Nuveman's fault when kids get hurt because of not wearing a facemask though she is making fun of people who wear one. It comes down to - if you have something to protect, you protect it.

No one ever answers that question, and believe me, I have brought that up.

Masks are not perceived as cool. Apparently cups for guys, wrist protection and shin/foot protection are. I have not seen many players get hit in the nuts, shins, or wrists, and not one hit that I have witnessed has been serious. Still, no one questions the toughness of a person wearing those items.

If a college doesn’t like players that wear masks, just put that statement on your recruit questionnaire. Problem solved, right?

Lastly, saying you cannot see out of a mask is a cop out. (Or, maybe the person making that argument just can’t see very well, and needs glasses.) If masks were that difficult to see out of, how could so many good batters wear them, with no problems?

Very weak analogy. Three kids commit suicide. Ozzy sings a song called Suicide Solution. He is a media person, a person of influence as you finger him. A fourth kid commits suicide. Blame it on on Ozzy?

The real point of the matter. The helmet crowd absolutely believes that it is a no brainier to wear a facemask. That the only reason you could conceive they would possibly choose to not use a mask when batting is undo peer pressure. The rest of the world is not there.

Someone from the other side of this discussion may "laugh their asses off " if a foultip just misses the cage your DD is wearing and injures her in another unprotected location. I would consider that also very small minded appraoch.

I think facemasks make sense in today's game. What I do not get is is why someone not wearing a facemask, or even mentioning not wearing a mask has to be met with calls of stupidity and blaming anything that happens on them. Not wearing a mask is just not that unreasonable of a choice.

These college girls playing are making their own decisions. I know my DD has decided on her own what helmet type she wants to wear and what she is comfortable with. Doesn't matter what I think.

An injury case could be made for any scenario. I've heard of a player injuring their MCL just by shagging balls.
Injuries are part of the game and hopefully knock on wood, nothing happens to my DD or any other player. However, the reality in sports is.... injuries do and will occur regardless.

For a game they love to play, I just hope its never serious....

Not so much defending but you can hardly blame her for every kid that gets injured because she didn't have a mask on.

During the WCWS Kelsea Roth of Missouri took a ball to the face off her own bat while not wearing a mask. I dont blame Nuveman for that injury or any others. Roth is old enough to make her own decisions.

I was going to copy and paste a bunch of stuff and comment ...

Younger DD arrived on campus and there were only two masks with helmets. One of the girls figured screw it, not worth sharing a helmet with all the girls that wanted a mask - not long until a foul ball broke her nose. We have been told that since it didn't threaten her life, that doesn't count. Everybody gets their opinion. I really think it is not that rare. Wreck and travel ball team mate's dad was a dentist. His daughter was the first one in wreck ball to wear a mask. Hadn't seen one before.

I happened to be watching when Ms. Nuveman made her comments. For me it was borderline nauseating. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Never really considered the baseball analogy. It's OK for base coaches to wear helmets, for Barry Bonds to wear this monster elbow guard so he can stand on the plate and bring that outside pitch into his wheel house. Not to mention the ankle / foot guards for the low foul balls (our DD get hit in the feet too). Cups? Can't F-ing field a ground ball? Work on those skills - shouldn't be getting any hops there anyway.

But come on! "Toughen up!" Lose that mask.

Injuries her fault? No. Idiot? Yes.

Anyway, I agree the masks shouldn't be required but there shouldn't be any vibe against them. It will evolve. A matter of time before the coaches have worn masks and studettes like those pointed out that wore mask rewrite the record books and it will be the norm that they will wear masks.

About a month ago, my daughter, a committed junior, casually mentioned to me that she hadn't decided whether or not she'd wear a mask while batting. She never thought twice about it before. I hope she makes the right decision.
