Cerritos softball coach arrested for lewd text messages to girl

A traveling softball coach has been arrested on suspicion of sending lewd text messages to a 14-year-old girl on his team, and police believe there may be other victims, authorities said Tuesday.
Anthony Christopher Sota, 40, of Anaheim was arrested in Long Beach in November on suspicion of contacting a minor for lewd acts and sending harmful matter to a minor, police said.
Sota was head coach for the So Cal Athletic Quarles 18U, a traveling girls’ softball team based in Cerritos. The team is not affiliated with any school athletic program.
Authorities said the investigation began in October when information was reported to police. Detectives interviewed a 14-year-old girl and learned that her travel softball coach had sent her lewd text messages with the intent of meeting to carry out the lewd acts, according to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department.
Detectives conducted numerous interviews and Sota, who also uses the last name DeLaSota, was subsequently arrested, police said. LBPD officials said the alleged crimes occurred within their jurisdiction.
Sota remains free on bail pending a future court appearance.
He couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday.
Bruce Richardson, head coach of the So Cal Athletics organization, said Sota hasn’t been with the team since the day the organization learned of the investigation.
“As far as I know, nobody’s had any contact with him,” he said.
Sota had led the nationally recognized team for about four years and was a well-respected softball coach, he said.
“You could say we were all caught off guard,” Richardson said.
Sota’s daughter was also on the team, but has since stopped playing softball, he added.
Records from Los Angeles County Superior Court and Orange County Superior Court show no criminal record for Sota.
Based on the level of contact between Sota and young girls, detectives believe there may be additional victims who have not contacted police.

There has been so many stories on what happen and how it happen. I for one will wait to cast a stone until the courts and Coach Sota has his chance to prove he didn't do it. This should not be the forum that we bash someone until we know the truth. I always thought Hey Bucket was for softball and our future in softball not to beat people up. At least wait for the trail. Sorry for the family's this affects Hey Bucket shouldn't be the place to hash it out.

This is a serious, life-changing event for all concerned. Probably best left to the legal system to determine what happened, not a discussion board. Here's hoping they get it right.

Rowdyone, "this shouldn't be the place to "hash it out"...really???

This is the perfect place to notify others of dangerous, criminal, horrible (I could come up with better adjectives, but I'll keep it PG-rated) behavior by somebody who was in a position of power over young girls.

When there is an article in the newspaper that, in fact, somebody has been arrested for an alleged crime against a minor (a 14 year old!!!), we should, as a community, do whatever it takes to protect our children and to get the word out so that if there are other victims, they too might come forward.

I wonder if it was your daughter, if you would be so quick to "wait to cast stones".

Actually he had not been arrested when the post was first made. He was not arrested until right before Thanksgiving. All the deleted posts were in October.
