One is my son, and currently working very hard trying to recover from a fractured skull and a traumatic brain injury caused by an unprovoked attack by a Hispanic that wanted to "beat on" a white kid - my son, a certain hate crime, that will not be prosecuted as such, because we are white. The friends he was out with that night, Flores, Ramires, Alvarez, and his girl friend at the time, Salinas. The second was a young "white looking" young guy name Alaniz - who was killed by a tatted up Hispanic punk who punched him in the left side of his head and fractured his skull, causing a traumatic brain injury - identical to the injury my son suffered - which he died from. My son received aid from a good Samaritan who saw him fall, saw he was not breathing and brought him back to life - the other young man was not as fortunate - and died. This young man would be alive today if he had been armed - my son would not be in his condition today - if he had been armed. The moral of this - concealed carry licenses and training in self defense with a fire arm. This crap is going to stop - and if a part of the population wants to act like uncivilized animals, then it will be sooner rather than later.

I was beat unconscious and spent a few days in the hospital and missed 6 weeks of work. I'm glad I did not have a gun because no man deserves to die. God will judge them not me. I was arrested as a 16 year old for burglary. As me and my white best friend were walking home thru a school yard a white janitor approached us with a bat and told us to stay put or he would swing. My white friend ran and as he took a swing at his legs, I tackled him and we both fought him to take the bat away from him. We were both arrested but I was the only one convicted of assault and burglary. The school had been broken into and computers were stolen. Although they found nothing the DA got my friends dad to have him testify that I had gang members in my family and carried a knife for protection. I was placed in a gang file kicked out of school and never played high school sports again. I played football, wrestling and baseball. All charges were dropped on the white boy for his cooperation and the Mexican boy was convicted. Under Florida law the janitor could've shot me and he would've been standing his ground. I would've stayed put but my buddy ran because he had a marijuana pipe on him and didn't want to get caught. His dad was a pastor. I learned don't be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A few years later I find out the janitor was fired for theft. White people have screwed me over many times in my life and I forgive them. You need to heal your heart and learn to forgive and mature as an adult. You said Martin was bashing his head in the pavement. Zimmerman's head would've been fine if he used better judgement and listened to the good judgement of the 911 dispatcher. Guns don't kill people, stupid people kill people. Zimmerman falls under the stupid people category. The fact that you are comparing your son to Travon Martin puts you in the same category. If your son was walking in a Hispanic neighborhood and was approached by a Hispanic with a gun who he dosent know and ended up dead you would be singing a different tune. Has nothing to do with revenge, that's Gods department. It has to do with self-defense and self protection. Trayvon Martin was a punk - a drugged up, thieving, punk. That doesn't mean he deserved to die. Beating Zimmerman's head into the pavement means Zimmerman has the right to use whatever means necessary to protect himself, no matter what kind of law Florida has. It was Trayvon's choice to attack - how hard would it have been to say, "Dude, I live right there with my dad?'s most recent girlfriend - that's where I am going." and kept walking. Zimmerman was doing exactly what I do in my neighborhood - though I wasn't carrying before - we are all carrying now. This case is as stupid and completely racist a case as releasing OJ Simpson and you know damn well we would never heard about it if Zimmerman was black. Probably not. Duty to retreat is only required in juristictions whose self defense laws require it and even then it isn't required if the person is in a place they have a right to be. Federal law does not require it and neither does California.

Most Stand-your-ground laws passed in the last 10 years had no impact on the existing definition of self defense. Their real impact was to provide immunity from prosecution and civil suits, which is much better than the pre-existing justifiable homicide defense.

Valid criticism is people can abuse them by initiating an altercation and then using their weapon if things are going badly for them - heads I win, tails you lose. Those laws should be reformed.

This was an unfortunate series of events which resulted in an outcome that far exceeded the initial circumstances. Zman bears some fault for his part in it and he certainly isn't coming out of this intact. Most of the fault rests with Trayvon and I don't buy the "child" arguments that try to exempt him from it. While legally a minor, he was old enough to be treated as an adult. For instance, our military accepts 17yo's with parental consent and I doubt they treat them as kids.
